Mali army and Russian Africa Corps enter Kidal as Tuareg rebels withdraw
A column of 120 military vehicles backed by Russian paramilitaries entered Kidal without resistance shortly before 13:00 GMT on Tuesday, following a withdrawal announced by the Azawad Liberation Front.
Military entry into Kidal
Malian government troops entered the northern town of Kidal on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, after separatist forces vacated their positions. A security source reported to Agence France-Presse that an army convoy reached the locality shortly before 13:00 GMT and encountered no armed resistance. The entry followed an announcement by the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) confirming a tactical pullback from the regional capital. Ground forces involved in the movement included regular Malian soldiers, Russian paramilitaries from the Africa Corps, and allied Tuareg fighters from the MSA and Gatia militias. The operation re-establishes Malian state control over the strategic northern crossroads after five months of rebel administration.
Ground push from Anéfis
The push toward Kidal began earlier on Tuesday morning when a military column of approximately 120 vehicles departed the town of Anéfis, roughly 100 kilometers to the south. Over the preceding weekend, the Malian military had built up positions and gathered reinforcements at both Anéfis and Aguelhoc. An independent security source confirmed that while aerial bombardments had struck regional targets over prior days, the advancing column met no direct combat on the road. The Malian military general staff released a statement at midday describing the mobilization as part of a coordinated campaign across the wider northern territory.
These operations have the objective of tracking down and neutralizing armed terrorist groups operating throughout the region, destroying their sanctuaries and supply networks, and durably restoring the security of populations and the free movement of people and goods.
Separatist withdrawal and air strikes
The FLA leadership announced its departure on social media, describing the action as a temporary operational measure to preserve military strength and protect civilians. According to a source close to the rebel command, aerial operations by state and Russian aircraft had intensified three days prior to the ground advance. The separatists asserted that continuous aerial bombardments made holding fixed defensive positions within the populated town untenable. The movement maintained that its retreat was designed to keep its personnel and logistical assets intact while continuing its insurgency across northern Mali.
Given the increasing risks to the few civilians still present in the city due to the disproportionate use of aerial vectors by Russian mercenaries from Africa Corps and the forces of the Bamako military junta, the FLA Military Command has decided to proceed with a strategic withdrawal of its forces from the locality of Kidal.
Sequence of control in northern Mali
The town of Kidal has repeatedly served as a central battleground since Mali's broader security crisis began in 2012. The transitional military authorities, who took power through coups in 2020 and 2021, previously reclaimed the town in November 2023 with the assistance of Russian Wagner Group contractors. That foothold was broken in late April 2026, when the FLA and the al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched synchronized attacks across Mali, including strikes near Bamako. Those coordinated assaults resulted in the death of Mali's defence minister and forced government troops to cede Kidal to the insurgent alliance.
- Malian forces and Russian Wagner paramilitaries retake Kidal from insurgents.
- FLA separatists and JNIM capture Kidal during nationwide attacks that killed Mali's defence minister.
- Malian and Russian forces initiate aerial strikes across the Kidal region.
- A convoy of roughly 120 military vehicles departs Anéfis toward Kidal.
- Malian army forces enter Kidal without facing resistance after the FLA announces a withdrawal.
