Majchrzak beats Medvedev 7-6(4), 6-1 to reach first ATP final at 's-Hertogenbosch
The 30-year-old Pole, ranked 76th, swept past the former world No. 1 in straight sets and will face Alex de Minaur for the title on Sunday.
Grass-court specialist finds form
Kamil Majchrzak, a 30-year-old from Piotrków Trybunalski, has consistently shown his best tennis on grass. After a first-round exit at Roland Garros on clay, he arrived at the ATP 250 in 's-Hertogenbosch and immediately looked sharp. The Pole, currently ranked 76th, defeated Otto Virtanen in the opening round after saving a match point, then cruised past James McCabe 6-0, 6-3. On Friday, he claimed the biggest win of his career, ousting top seed and world No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-3.
Overcoming a former world No. 1
In Saturday's semifinal, Majchrzak faced eighth-ranked Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion. Medvedev had been forced to complete his rain-delayed quarterfinal against Marin Cilic earlier that day, while Majchrzak enjoyed a full day of rest. The first set was tight, with both players creating break points, but it went to a tie-break. Majchrzak took it 7-4. In the second, he broke early and pulled away to win 6-1, sealing his place in the final in 80 minutes.
First ATP final awaits
The victory marks the first time Majchrzak has reached a title match on the ATP Tour. He will take on Alex de Minaur on Sunday. A win would give him his first ATP trophy and cap a remarkable week on Dutch grass. The tournament, a traditional warm-up for Wimbledon, has already seen him overcome two top-10 opponents in consecutive days.
