Madrid approves 2027 work calendar with 14 holidays and reinstates Saint Joseph's Day

Approval of the 2027 calendar

The Governing Council of the Community of Madrid, led by regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, approved the regional labor calendar for 2027 on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. Regional Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration Miguel Ángel García Martín presented the decree following the weekly government meeting. The decree outlines the 12 public holidays managed at the regional level under the framework of Spain's Workers' Statute. Each municipality across the region will select two additional local holidays in the coming weeks, bringing the annual total to 14 non-working days for workers. The approved decree is being submitted to the central government with the 12 fixed regional dates after consultations with parliamentary groups in the Madrid Assembly and representative social and economic institutions.

Reinstatement of Saint Joseph's Day and Easter schedule

A central feature of the 2027 calendar is the return of Saint Joseph's Day on Friday, 19 March 2027, as an official non-working holiday. The regional administration chose to designate this date because the official Day of the Community of Madrid on Sunday, 2 May 2027, falls on the weekend and is not shifted to Monday, 3 May 2027. The placement of Saint Joseph's Day on a Friday creates a three-day weekend right before Easter Week. Workers in the region will experience a second holiday break later that month, as Maundy Thursday on 25 March 2027 and Good Friday on 26 March 2027 are both established as regional non-working days. February and April 2027 will contain no public holidays on the regional schedule.

Summer and autumn holiday adjustments

The regional government also altered summer holiday arrangements because the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin on Sunday, 15 August 2027, falls on the weekend. To preserve the rest day, the administration moved the holiday to Monday, 16 August 2027, providing a three-day weekend in mid-August. In the second half of 2027, the National Day of Spain will be observed on Tuesday, 12 October 2027. All Saints' Day falls on Monday, 1 November 2027, yielding another extended weekend for workers across the region. Labor Day on Saturday, 1 May 2027, falls on the weekend, giving no weekday bridge to start the month of May.

Year-end schedule and municipal choices

The final month of 2027 includes three public holidays across two separate weeks. Spanish Constitution Day falls on Monday, 6 December 2027, followed by the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday, 8 December 2027. Christmas Day, celebrated as the Nativity of the Lord, falls on Saturday, 25 December 2027. In the capital, the Madrid City Council has designated Saturday, 15 May 2027, for San Isidro Labrador and Tuesday, 9 November 2027, for Our Lady of La Almudena as its two local holidays. Other city councils across the Madrid autonomous community will establish their own two municipal dates in accordance with local traditions.
