Spain confirms 88-year-old woman murdered in Madrid domestic violence case

Spain's Ministry of Equality has confirmed the death of an 88-year-old woman in San Sebastián de los Reyes as a gender violence murder, raising the national toll for 2026 to 37.

Discovery at the residence

A caregiver arriving for work on Thursday morning, 10 September 2026, discovered an 88-year-old woman severely injured in her bed and her 90-year-old husband dead by hanging at their home in San Sebastián de los Reyes, north of Madrid. The woman had suffered severe blunt-force trauma to her head as well as defensive injuries on her arms. Medical personnel from the Summa 112 emergency service stabilized the victim at the scene before transferring her to the Infanta Sofía Hospital. Despite emergency treatment, she died from her injuries on Friday, 11 September.

Police investigators, including the Violent Crimes Group (DEVI) of the Scientific Police and the Homicide Division, took charge of the scene to collect forensic evidence. Judicial authorities confirmed that there were no prior domestic abuse reports filed against the husband.

On Monday, 14 September 2026, the Ministry of Equality officially confirmed the incident as a gender-based killing. Political reactions and prevention system

Minister of Equality Ana Redondo García and the Government Delegate against Gender Violence, Carmen Martínez Perza, released a joint condemnation expressing support for the victim's family and calling for stronger institutional coordination. Speaking during a security inspection in the Vallecas district of Madrid, the Government Delegate in the Community of Madrid, Francisco Martín, called for broader public and municipal involvement in domestic abuse prevention.

The investigation is open. At this time it is being handled by the Gender Violence Court.

— Francisco Martín

Martín also noted that approximately 30 municipalities across the Madrid region have not joined VioGén, Spain's centralized police monitoring system for gender violence, despite meeting the administrative requirements. He described those local municipal refusals as completely unjustified.

Unfortunately we cannot reach every situation, and that is why it is essential to appeal to society as a whole to do everything in our power to provide solutions and try to end this barbarity as soon as possible.

— Francisco Martín

Support services for domestic violence victims in Spain remain accessible through the national 016 helpline, which operates 24 hours a day in 53 languages, alongside the Alertcops mobile emergency application.
