Crane collapse at Madrid construction site damages three buildings in Tetuán district, no injuries reported

What happened

Just after 13:30 on Monday, a large iron crane collapsed inside a construction site at Calle Francisco de Salas 27-29 in Madrid's Tetuán district, near Bravo Murillo. The structure, which had been installed in an interior courtyard as part of a rehabilitation project begun last year, fell onto the building under construction and then struck two adjacent residential properties on Calle Castilla and Calle Tenerife.

No injuries have been reported.

Damage and evacuations

The impact caused a partial collapse of a dwelling on Calle Tenerife 60, leaving a large hole in its structure. On Calle Castilla 19, two terraces and the roof of a storage-unit area were damaged. As a precaution, the family living at the Tenerife address was evacuated, along with all workers from the construction site. By 15:00, no other residents had been forced to leave, though inspections were ongoing.

Emergency response

At least six fire crews from the Madrid City Council, along with two command vehicles, were deployed to secure the area and begin clearing debris. Samur-Protección Civil ambulances remained on standby throughout the intervention, although no medical attention was required. Municipal Police officers, supported by a drone unit, surveyed the scene to gauge the full extent of structural damage and to rule out further risks. National Police also attended.

Next steps

Firefighters continue to stabilise the affected sections. In coordination with the construction company, they plan to dismantle the collapsed crane. Technical inspections are under way to determine whether the neighbouring buildings remain structurally sound, and the immediate area stays cordoned off while the work proceeds.
