Nature of the banner and stadium warnings
The banner displayed in the north stand contained an insult in Spanish targeting AS Saint-Etienne, Lyon's traditional regional rivals. The text read "Saint-Étienne, la concha de tu madre" and had been put on display prior to kickoff before remaining visible throughout the opening 30 minutes of play. AS Saint-Etienne currently plays in the French second division, where the club leads the league table under head coach Ian Cathro. As the banner remained hoisted, the stadium public address announcer made two separate announcements across the Groupama Stadium sound system. Intervention by team leadership
When supporters in the north stand initially refused to take down the offending fabric, members of the Lyon team attempted to de-escalate the situation. Lyon club captain Corentin Tolisso and manager Paulo Fonseca walked directly to the base of the north stand, which houses the Bad Gones organized supporters group. Both Tolisso and Fonseca spoke with the ultras to convince them to remove the banner and allow the Ligue 1 encounter to proceed. The initial refusal by the fans left referee Mathieu Vernice with no immediate choice other than to suspend the match temporarily. Both teams left the field under the supervision of the officiating crew while dialogue continued in the stands.
Resumption of play
The players spent approximately five minutes inside the dressing rooms while stadium officials and fan leaders finalized the removal of the banner. Supporters in the north stand ultimately took down the display, bringing an end to an overall stoppage that lasted between 13 and 15 minutes. For Stade Rennais, known as the Rouge et Noir, the unexpected suspension provided a brief window to reorganize tactically after falling behind by two goals in the opening period. Once the banner was completely removed, referee Mathieu Vernice called both teams back out onto the Groupama Stadium pitch. The match resumed from the point of interruption in the late stages of the first half with Lyon maintaining their 2-0 lead.
