Lyon defeats Anderlecht 2-1 in Europa League opener with rotated lineup

Olympique Lyonnais opened their UEFA Europa League league phase campaign with a 2-1 victory over RSC Anderlecht at Lotto Park on Wednesday. Lyon entered the competition following their elimination in the UEFA Champions League playoff round against Turkish club Fenerbahce in late August. Anderlecht resurgence and defensive resistance

The Belgian hosts increased their offensive tempo following the interval after struggling to match Lyon during the opening hour of the match. Lyon had multiple opportunities to seal the outcome early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Tyler Morton placed the ball into the net after Openda struck the post, but match officials disallowed the goal for an offside infraction against Morton. Openda forced a save from Coosemans in the 59th minute, but Anderlecht capitalized on a defensive mistake sixty seconds later. Lyon defender Clinton Mata misplaced a clearance, allowing Ali Maamar to deliver a cross from the right flank. Forward Mihajlo Cvetkovic scored with a diving header in the 60th minute, marking Anderlecht's 100th all-time goal in Europa League competition.

Closing minutes and upcoming schedule

The 60th-minute header disrupted Lyon's control and forced the French side into sustained defensive work across the final half-hour. Anderlecht applied heavy pressure, but goalkeeper Remy Descamps proved decisive in stopping the home side's late attacks. Descamps made a key save in the 80th minute by turning away a shot from substitute Tawfik Bentayeb to maintain the 2-1 lead. Lyon held on through remaining regular time and stoppage time to take all three points from Brussels in the 36-team league phase. Elsewhere in the tournament, French counterparts Rennes recorded a 1-1 draw against Austrian side Sturm Graz. Lyon will host English Premier League club Crystal Palace in their second Europa League fixture on 15 October, following their domestic clash with Rennes.
