Family and collaborators of Łukasz Litewka establish foundation to continue his charitable mission
Three months after the MP's death in a bicycle accident, his family and collaborators have set up the Fundacja im. Łukasza Litewki to carry on his charitable work, following a dispute over his legacy.
A tragic death
Łukasz Litewka, a 36-year-old MP for the New Left (Nowa Lewica), died on 23 April 2026 after being struck by a car while cycling on Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The driver, a 57-year-old man from Sosnowiec, was immediately detained, charged with causing a fatal accident, and later released on bail of 40,000 złoty. The investigation is ongoing, with a full expert reconstruction of the crash expected in September, which will allow the case to move forward. Litewka was widely known not only for his parliamentary work but for his extensive charitable activities, particularly through the "Team Litewka" initiative that mobilised hundreds of thousands of people to raise funds for sick children and animal shelters.
Legal complications and a split
In the three months following his death, the family and close collaborators faced what they described as "legal complications and a divergence in vision and fundamental values" regarding the mission Litewka had built. According to Dziennik Zachodni, part of the Team Litewka community held a different view on how to continue the work than the family, leading to a conflict. The family decided to halt communication related to the existing foundation's activities and instead worked to secure the legacy in a way fully aligned with the family's wishes, which they said Litewka always placed first. "We know how much respect Łukasz had for his family... He would do anything for her," the statement read.
The foundation announcement
On 9 July, the family and former collaborators jointly established the Fundacja im. Łukasza Litewki (Łukasz Litewka Foundation). In a statement posted on Litewka's official Facebook profile on 17–18 July, they explained that this was the only viable path forward.
It is for us the only possible way to continue His mission. We have in a sense taken a step back, organizationally and legally we are starting from scratch, but the situation forced us to do so.
They stressed that no one intends to replace Litewka or speak in his name. The foundation's purpose is to honour him and prevent the loss of his life's work: the Team Litewka community of hundreds of thousands of people.
A video tribute
The statement was accompanied by a video over three minutes long, containing previously unpublished footage of Litewka. The post began with the words: "Surely at this moment your heart beat faster... you see a post from Łukasz – unfortunately it is no longer him." The video showed the MP in various moments, with his voice heard, serving as a reminder of his dedication.
The community's future
The family and collaborators thanked supporters for their patience and encouragement during the months of silence. They emphasised that the strength of the initiative lies in its people, not in any single place or structure.
It is not the place, but the people are the power. We know that thanks to you, 'this cannot be stopped'!
The foundation now faces the task of rebuilding the organisational and legal framework from the ground up, but the signatories expressed confidence that the community built over 13 years will endure.
