Romelu Lukaku transfers from Napoli to Fenerbahçe for approximately 6 million euros

Napoli and Fenerbahçe reached an agreement on August 11 for the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, with the Istanbul club paying approximately 6 million euros plus bonuses. SAPO reported the bonuses could reach 2 million euros, while De Standaard cited the total fee as around 7 million euros. The 33-year-old Belgian striker had already agreed personal terms with Fenerbahçe and completed medical tests in Belgium. He is expected to sign a one-year contract with an option for an additional year, though RTBF reported a two-year deal with an option for a third season.

Difficult second season in Naples

Lukaku joined Napoli in 2024 from Chelsea for approximately 30 million euros (SAPO cited 30.7 million) and won the Scudetto in his first season, scoring 14 goals. His second campaign unraveled through injury and conflict. He played only seven matches in 2025/26, registering one goal and accumulating just 42 minutes of playing time in Italy. He fell out with coach Antonio Conte, with whom he had previously worked successfully at Inter, after returning to training too quickly from injury and suffering a relapse that cost him the trust of the medical staff. During the preseason he trained in Belgium with physiotherapist Lieven Maesschalck rather than joining Napoli's camp. Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis and sporting director Giovanni Manna had been pushing for his departure for six months, a process accelerated when the club signed Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United for 44 million euros.

Why Turkey

Lukaku's agent Federico Pastorello had proposed a move to Atlanta United in MLS, but the striker declined. He also rejected approaches from Saudi Arabia and was linked with AS Monaco, Trabzonspor, and Besiktas, the last denied by his entourage. Lukaku wanted to remain in a competitive European league and compete for trophies. Fenerbahçe, which has not won the Turkish title since the 2013/14 season, offered both. The club's vice president contacted Lukaku and his legal advisors at law firm Cresta approximately ten days before the agreement, and negotiations advanced quickly. Fenerbahçe also offers Champions League football: the club won its third qualifying round first leg against Sturm Graz 2-0 and plays the return match on August 12, with Lyon or Sparta Prague awaiting in the playoff round should they advance.

Anderlecht return deferred

In January, Lukaku publicly stated his intention to eventually return to Anderlecht.

Everyone knows I will return to Anderlecht. I mean it: I'm not coming to wind down.

A return to the Brussels club was never a concrete option this summer. Owner Marc Coucke and CEO Kenneth Bornauw recognized that Lukaku's salary, reported at 7.7 million euros gross per year at Napoli, was beyond Anderlecht's means, and there was no concrete contact regarding a transfer. Lukaku intends to compete for trophies at Fenerbahçe first, with a return to Anderlecht likely further down the line. Coucke acknowledged the bond between player and club.

He is incredibly loyal. To his family, to his friends, but also to 'his' Anderlecht.

National team and Fenerbahçe's rebuild

Belgium coach Mark van Bommel welcomed the move, as Lukaku remaining in Europe is viewed positively by the Belgian football federation. Lukaku was included in Belgium's squad for the 2026 World Cup and is determined to revive his career. At Fenerbahçe, he becomes the club's third high-profile signing of the window, following Mason Greenwood from Marseille and Nathan Aké from Manchester City. He will also join Portuguese international Nélson Semedo in the squad.
