Monaco comeback at Parc des Princes
Monaco moved to the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Friday. Contract extensions announced before match
Before the match commenced, PSG announced a series of contract extensions led by head coach Luis Enrique committing his future to the club until 2030. Four players agreed deals running until 2031: defenders Lucas Beraldo and Willian Pacho, midfielder Joao Neves, and 20-year-old academy graduate Senny Mayulu. Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz, 30, agreed to a contract until 2028 with an option for an additional season. Poorest league start in nineteen years
The defeat leaves the reigning French champions on two points from their opening three league fixtures, sitting in 12th place and seven points behind Monaco. The return represents PSG's poorest start to a league campaign since the 2007-08 season under Paul Le Guen, when the team failed to win until their sixth match and finished in 16th place. PSG previously recorded a 2-2 draw with Lille in their previous fixture. Defender Lucas Hernandez reflected on the squad adjustments following squad turnover in the attacking department.
“I think we're all on the right track. There are a lot of attacking players who have left, a lot of new ones. It's up to us to put them in the best positions so that they adapt to our system, which is difficult because we have a lot of mobility. But I'm confident, about this team, about this coach, even if the start of the season is not as we wanted.”
Champions League preparation
Luis Enrique dismissed concerns about the seven-point gap in the standings, pointing to Monaco scoring from their only two shots on target.
“There is no reason to be concerned. I say that honestly. How many shots on target did Monaco have? Two. How many goals? Two. We'll see at the end of the season whether things balance out.”
The 56-year-old coach, who joined the club in 2023, has won two consecutive Champions League titles and three Ligue 1 titles, guiding PSG to six trophies in the 2024-25 campaign. PSG host Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday in their opening match of the European group stage.
