Unsealed bodycam video captures Luigi Mangione arrest at Pennsylvania McDonald's
A Manhattan judge unsealed police bodycam recordings showing officers detaining Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the fatal shooting of healthcare executive Brian Thompson.
Unsealed bodycam footage of Pennsylvania arrest
Newly released police bodycam recordings document the 9 December 2024 arrest of Luigi Mangione inside a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. A Manhattan judge unsealed the video files on Friday after a petition by CNN. The footage shows the conclusion of a five-day nationwide search launched after the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old chief executive of UnitedHealthcare. Thompson, an executive from Minnesota, was killed in midtown Manhattan while walking to a hotel for his company's annual investor conference. The killing drew broad attention to public frustration over healthcare insurance practices in the United States.
Portions of the video recordings had previously been shown during a December 2024 court hearing. During that session, defense attorneys unsuccessfully argued to suppress critical evidence, including initial statements Mangione made to responding officers and physical items seized at the scene of the arrest.
Fast food encounter and identification
The police response began after an employee at the McDonald's on East Plank Road in Altoona alerted authorities. A customer in the restaurant had noticed similarities between Mangione's physical appearance and published images of the suspect distributed during the manhunt. When officers arrived at the restaurant, they encountered Mangione seated and wearing a face mask intended to conceal his identity.
During questioning, Mangione initially told the responding officers that his name was Mark Rosario and presented a false identity before later acknowledging his real name. Officers instructed him to lower his face mask. After viewing his face, officers stepped outside the building to confer out of Mangione's hearing range, with one officer remarking that it was "100% him" and a second officer affirming the identification. Mangione subsequently admitted to shooting Thompson in Manhattan.
Search of belongings and weapon recovery
Once Mangione was detained, officers searched his person and his belongings inside the restaurant. The bodycam video shows an officer opening Mangione's backpack to examine the contents. The search yielded a gun magazine, a firearm, and an ammunition cartridge, which officers logged into custody at the scene.
- Brian Thompson is fatally shot outside a midtown Manhattan hotel.
- Police arrest Luigi Mangione inside an Altoona McDonald's after a five-day manhunt.
- Mangione enters a guilty plea to federal stalking charges.
- Manhattan judge unseals police bodycam recordings following a media petition.
- Scheduled sentencing date where federal prosecutors seek life imprisonment.
The footage shows the searching officer pulling the cartridge from the bag as police confirmed the match with the wanted suspect. The seized firearm and ammunition formed key physical evidence in the murder and weapons possession charges filed against Mangione following the five-day search across state lines.
Federal plea and court proceedings
Mangione pleaded guilty in August to federal stalking charges related to the killing of Thompson. Federal prosecutors have stated they will seek a sentence of life imprisonment, the maximum penalty allowed under federal guidelines. His federal sentencing is scheduled to take place on 18 December.
In addition to the federal case, Mangione faces separate state-level charges of murder and weapons possession in New York state court. Those proceedings have been postponed indefinitely while his defense lawyers petition the court to have the state case dismissed.
