Blockade at the Louvre
Students from the Louvre School (École du Louvre) blocked access to the museum on 19 October 2026, closing both the main Pyramid entrance and the Richelieu passage. The museum could not open at its scheduled 09:00 start. A spokesperson told visitors waiting outside that the museum would stay closed that day and that entry fees would be refunded. Museum management said the action was not directly linked to the institution and that the students were using the building as a platform. Museum management described the action as led by about fifty students, and one union said the blockade could last at least until noon.
What the students say
The students express support for the secondary-school movement and denounce what they call police repression of young protesters. A leaflet posted at the entrances and seen by AFP accuses the government of answering the youth protests with police force. The same text lists budget cuts, job cuts and a decline in public services as grievances. The organisers present the blockade as a last resort after several weeks of mobilisation. They say the student movement began in France's overseas territories before spreading to the capital.
Weekend unrest and arrests
Protests over the weekend of 17 and 18 October 2026 disrupted much of France. A town hall was set on fire, several shops were looted and many buildings were covered in graffiti, while violent groups clashed with police in cities across the country. Police made a record 855 arrests in Paris. Across the country, police detained about 1,800 people, and more than 500 officers were injured, the interior minister said. More than half a million people took part in marches in dozens of cities. Mediafax and AFP framed the movement as a month-old student campaign combined with wider anger over rising living costs and declining public services.

A dispute already affecting the museum
The students' action is not directly linked to the Louvre, but the museum has already faced repeated disruption over the past year. A staff strike that began after vandalism on 19 October 2025 has interrupted access to the museum several times. The strikers are demanding better working conditions and higher pay. The blockade on 19 October 2026 therefore hit an institution already dealing with a labour conflict. Visitors who had bought tickets were the first to bear the cost, as the museum had to refund entry fees for the day.
