Liverpool complete £123 million transfer of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain

Liverpool finalized the transfer of French winger Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday, August 31. The Premier League club agreed to a total financial package of £123 million ($166 million, or €144 million), which consists of a guaranteed £106 million (€123 million) base fee and up to £17 million (€20 million) in performance-related add-ons. Liverpool also agreed to cover a £4.3 million (€5 million) solidarity payment due to Olympique Lyonnais, the player's formative club. The transaction sets a new record fee for a player departing Ligue 1 and stands as the most expensive transfer of the summer 2026 window. Barcola signed a five-year contract with the Merseyside club, where he will wear the number 29 shirt. The deal makes Barcola the second most expensive signing in Liverpool's history behind Alexander Isak.

Negotiation breakthrough

Negotiations over the 23-year-old French international spanned several months before reaching a formal agreement in late August. Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi initially sought €170 million for the forward, engaging in extended discussions with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes. Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon stepped in during the later stages after FSG chief executive of football Michael Edwards departed. A crunch meeting on August 25 narrowed the valuation difference, followed by final terms being settled on August 28. Barcola, who had two years remaining on his PSG contract, maintained throughout the process that his heart was set on moving to Anfield.

Role in Liverpool's rebuilt attack

Barcola joins an attack rebuilt under manager Andoni Iraola, which already features striker Alexander Isak and playmaker Florian Wirtz. The transfer lifts Liverpool's overall squad expenditure to nearly £670 million including performance add-ons since the start of last summer. Primarily operating as a left winger, Barcola arrived after Mohamed Salah departed for Turkish club Trabzonspor following a nine-year tenure at Anfield. Liverpool began their domestic campaign with consecutive draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, using Cody Gakpo and summer signing Victor Muñoz on the left flank. In his initial interview on the club website, the French forward expressed his long-term ambition for the team.

Barcola's trajectory and PSG record

Barcola arrived at PSG from Lyon in August 2023 for €45 million ($52 million) and accumulated 13 trophies during three seasons in the French capital. Across 152 appearances for the club, he recorded 39 goals and helped PSG win back-to-back Champions League titles, three Ligue 1 championships, and two French Cups. He faced competition for starting minutes against Desire Doue, 2025 Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia during his final season in Paris. Internationally, Barcola made his senior France debut in June 2024, scoring six goals in 28 appearances, including three at the 2026 World Cup where France finished fourth after losing to Spain in the semifinals. PSG manager Luis Enrique oversaw two draws in their opening Ligue 1 fixtures without Barcola, having added Maghnes Akliouche, Ferran Torres, and Mika Godts during the summer window.
