Lithuania lifts air alert and reopens Vilnius airport after suspected drone detection
Lithuanian authorities lifted a yellow air alert and reopened Vilnius airport on Saturday morning after NATO fighter jets scrambled to investigate an unidentified flying object suspected to have crossed from Belarus.
Airspace alert and military response
Lithuanian authorities declared a yellow air alert across Vilnius County and the Ukmergė district on Saturday morning, 3 October 2026, after military radar detected a suspicious airborne object. Officials suspected the object had crossed into national airspace from neighbouring Belarus. In response to the potential aerial threat, NATO Baltic air policing fighter jets scrambled to intercept and track the craft. The government crisis center distributed an emergency alert urging residents across eastern Lithuania to identify nearby air raid shelters and remain indoors.
The object has not yet been fully identified.
Identification and airport resumption
Following the scramble, Vilnius airport temporarily suspended all flight operations while military jets searched the sector. The National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC) announced the cancellation of the yellow alert after approximately 40 minutes, determining that the airborne contact no longer posed a threat to the public. Normal flight operations resumed shortly afterward at Vilnius airport, though aviation officials advised passengers that flight delays or cancellations remained possible. NKVC head Vilmantas Vitkauskas explained that tracking data showed parameters differing slightly from typical drone profiles.
Confirmed lack of air threat, because the object poses no danger. I cannot say at this moment whether it was birds or another object.

Resident reports and flight direction
During the alert, authorities investigated multiple witness sightings from citizens living outside the capital. Several residents contacted emergency services to report an unidentified flying object moving northwest from the outskirts of Vilnius toward the central city of Jonava. Vitkauskas stated that these accounts originated from civilian observations rather than confirmed military radar tracks. Search teams continued efforts on the ground to locate any potential debris or fallen equipment in case the contact was an unmanned aerial vehicle that had crashed.
If it fell, if it was a drone, it will have to be found. But it did not necessarily have to be a drone, as certain parameters indicated that the speed was slightly lower than usual.
Regional airspace context
The Saturday alert followed a pattern of heightened aerial surveillance across the Baltic region linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine. In September 2026, Lithuania shot down a drone that violated its sovereign airspace for the first time, an incident preceded by similar airspace incursions in neighbouring Latvia and Estonia. Lithuania shares a border with Belarus, a close ally of Russia that hosts Russian missiles, though Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has maintained that his forces will not openly participate in active military hostilities. Lithuanian defense officials noted that Baltic air defense patrols remain on continuous standby to respond to cross-border aerial incursions.
