Police chase in Lisbon leaves three injured and unlicensed driver arrested

Police checkpoint evasion and pursuit

At approximately 07:30 on the morning of Saturday, 29 August 2026, a police pursuit developed along Avenida Brasília between the Alcântara and Algés districts of Lisbon. The incident began during a routine traffic inspection conducted by the Public Security Police (PSP). Two vehicles refused to obey an order to stop at the checkpoint and accelerated away from the inspection site. Officers from the PSP Lisbon Traffic Division pursued the fleeing vehicles on motorcycles. One of the escaping vehicles crossed the Algés viaduct and managed to evade police apprehension, while officers continued tracking the second vehicle as it travelled westbound along the riverside corridor.

Collision, vehicle fire, and roadside rescue

As the second vehicle approached the viaduct connecting Avenida Brasília to Avenida da Índia, near the Champalimaud Foundation and the Combatant Museum (Museu do Combatente), the driver lost control of the car. The vehicle skidded off the road and collided with two unoccupied cars parked on Avenida Brasília. Source reports indicated that the two stationary vehicles belonged to local fishermen who were in the area. The impact ignited a fire in the fleeing car that quickly engulfed the vehicle and damaged the parked cars. A pursuing PSP motorcycle officer stopped at the collision scene to pull the trapped driver out of the burning wreckage before flames spread further. The PSP issued an official statement detailing the officer's intervention during the emergency.

The collision resulted in damage to the parked vehicles and a fire in the fleeing vehicle, requiring the motorcycle officer conducting the pursuit to immobilize his vehicle and remove the driver from the burning car.

Casualty counts and hospital transfers

Five people were travelling inside the vehicle that crashed during the pursuit. Following the impact, two occupants exited the car independently and fled the area on foot, evading immediate capture by authorities. The remaining three occupants, including the driver, sustained injuries and were trapped in the vehicle before being extracted by emergency crews and the pursuing officer. Firefighters from the Sapadores Bombeiros de Lisboa and the Bombeiros de Algés responded to the location alongside PSP personnel to extinguish the blaze and administer initial medical care. The three injured individuals, aged between 25 and 31, were transported to medical facilities in Lisbon. Two of the injured, including one in serious condition, were admitted to Hospital de Santa Maria, while a third injured passenger was transferred to Hospital de São Francisco Xavier.

Arrest, criminal charges, and traffic closure

Following his medical extraction, the driver of the crashed car was placed under formal arrest at the scene. PSP investigators confirmed that the individual did not hold a valid driver's license. Authorities filed multiple criminal charges against the suspect relating to the pursuit and subsequent collision.

The driver of the vehicle was detained for lack of legal driving qualification, resistance and coercion against an official, and dangerous driving.

Lisbon PSP Traffic Division Commissioner Carlos Fernandes stated to reporters that the detained driver will be presented before a judge for judicial interrogation. Municipal emergency teams and police units kept Avenida Brasília closed to traffic in the Alcântara to Algés direction throughout the morning to clear debris, remove the three damaged vehicles, and carry out road cleaning operations.
