Thuringia Linke urges Mario Voigt to call confidence vote after BSW collapse leaves coalition with 39 votes

Pressure on the minority government

At a state party conference in Erfurt on 19 September 2026, delegates of Die Linke approved a position paper addressing the weakened minority government in Thuringia. The disintegration of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) as a governing party reduced Minister-President Mario Voigt's CDU-led coalition from 44 to 39 reliable votes in the state parliament. Because Landtag decisions require a minimum of 45 votes, the government cannot pass legislation without cross-party support. The adopted paper declared that no party can bypass Die Linke without seeking alternative majorities with the AfD. Delegates resolved that if the governing coalition fails to demonstrate how it will secure stable governance, Voigt should submit to a formal vote of confidence in the Landtag.

Budget concessions and conditions

Addressing the Erfurt congress, 35-year-old parliamentary group leader Christian Schaft rejected any unconditional backing for the state government. He stated that Die Linke, now the third-largest parliamentary faction behind the AfD and the CDU, would negotiate compromises only when they deliver concrete improvements for residents. Schaft explained that during negotiations for the 2026/2027 biennial budget, the party successfully averted planned spending cuts to cultural institutions and youth clubs. However, the faction is still waiting for the state cabinet to establish an agreed 70 million euro support fund for businesses undergoing structural transformation. Schaft directly addressed Voigt, stating that greater reliability requires trust and demanding that previous budgetary agreements be executed in full.

Membership influx and internal structure

State party chairwoman Katja Maurer reported that Die Linke in Thuringia has experienced continuous membership growth, reaching approximately 4,500 registered members. The state branch has added an average of four new members each day, with more than 1,700 people joining since the beginning of 2025. This influx included 50 new registrations following the AfD victory in the neighbouring Saxony-Anhalt state election in early September 2026. Maurer noted that managing this influx presents an organisational challenge as the party works to maintain operational effectiveness. To integrate newcomers, she proposed establishing mentoring tandems that pair experienced party members with recent recruits.

Long-term electoral strategy

The party leadership framed its expanded parliamentary leverage as a stepping stone toward the 2029 state election. Die Linke previously headed the Thuringian state government under Minister-President Bodo Ramelow from 2014 until 2024, with only a brief interruption, and party leaders reaffirmed their ambition to become the strongest force in the next state election. Ahead of the Erfurt conference, isolated internal voices had circulated a letter demanding a strict refusal to cooperate with Voigt's coalition. Delegates rejected that rigid approach, opting instead to extract policy concessions in exchange for votes while maintaining the option to force a confidence motion if commitments are broken.
