Opening set turnaround in Beijing
Magda Linette was eliminated from the WTA 1000 China Open on Thursday after losing 6-4, 6-3 to Kateřina Siniaková in an opening-round match lasting 90 minutes. The 34-year-old from Poznań, ranked 80th in the WTA singles rankings, started quickly by breaking Siniaková in the second game to build an early 2-0 lead. Siniaková responded immediately with a break of her own, but Linette broke again to establish a 4-2 advantage on the hard courts in the Chinese capital. The momentum shifted as the 30-year-old Czech player from Hradec Králové reduced her unforced errors and began finding the lines with aggressive groundstrokes. Siniaková took four consecutive games, capitalizing on an unforced error from Linette at 30:40 in the tenth game to secure the opening set 6-4 after 45 minutes of play.

Siniaková secures the straight-sets victory
The second set began with Linette holding serve before Siniaková defended against a break point to level the score at 1-1. Siniaková secured a break in the third game at 30:40 to go ahead 2-1, but Linette responded by creating three break opportunities in the following game and converting the second to make it 2-2. The Czech competitor broke back in the fifth game when Linette hit a backhand wide at 30:40, moving ahead 3-2 before consolidating the advantage on her own serve for a 4-2 lead. Linette held to narrow the score to 3-4 and generated a break point in the eighth game to level the contest. Siniaková held off the challenge through baseline defense to lead 5-3, then broke Linette for the third time in the set to finish the match 6-3.
Summer form and head-to-head records
The defeat in Beijing extended a difficult sequence for Linette, who has recorded only one singles victory since Wimbledon, a win over Carol Zhao in Toronto. Since that match, Linette has suffered consecutive opening-round defeats in Toronto, Cincinnati, the US Open, and Seoul, where she fell to an opponent ranked in the third hundred of the world rankings. Siniaková entered the tournament ranked 55th in singles and world No. 1 in doubles, frequently partnering with Taylor Townsend, and had previously earned seeding positions in London and Cincinnati. Siniaková arrived in Beijing after winning the Billie Jean King Cup with the Czech national team in Shenzhen. Before Thursday, Linette held a 3-2 lead in their head-to-head series after winning their first three encounters, but Siniaková had won their two most recent meetings in Grodzisk Mazowiecki in 2022 and Ningbo in 2024.
