Lin Yu-ting wins Asian Games boxing gold in Japan with 5-0 final victory
Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting secured the 60kg gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nishio, defeating China's Yang Chengyu by unanimous decision after a 19-month break from international competition.
Final bout in Nishio
Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting won the gold medal in the women's 60-kilogram division at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games on 2 October 2026. Facing China's Yang Chengyu in Nishio, the 30-year-old secured a unanimous 5-0 victory on the judges' scorecards. Lin established control early in the contest by relying on her superior reach advantage, keeping her opponent at distance during the initial two rounds. Yang launched an offensive during the third round in an attempt to recover her point deficit, but Lin maintained her tactical lead through the final bell. The bout concluded with all five ringside judges awarding the victory to Lin. The win represents Lin's second gold medal at the Asian Games, having previously won the 57-kilogram title at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou.

Weight transition and return to competition
The gold medal represents Lin's return to the international boxing stage following a 19-month absence from official bouts. After securing the Olympic title at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she stepped back from international competition before receiving clearance to resume fighting in 2026. During this hiatus, Lin transferred to the 60-kilogram weight division to start competing in a higher weight class. She previously told Agence France-Presse that she had seriously considered retiring from professional boxing after Paris, believing she had achieved all of her career goals by winning Olympic gold. However, Lin decided against retirement, choosing to continue her athletic career in part to confront individuals who questioned her right to compete in women's boxing.
Paris 2024 Olympics and eligibility disputes
Lin and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif had competed under intense scrutiny during the Paris 2024 Games regarding their eligibility. The International Boxing Association (IBA) had disqualified both athletes from the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi, asserting that they failed gender eligibility tests involving testosterone levels, though the organization did not release the underlying test data. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declined to recognize the IBA's ruling and permitted both fighters to enter the Olympic tournament. The IOC supported the new organization World Boxing, which replaced the IBA. In Paris, both athletes won gold in their respective divisions, with Khelif defeating China's Yang Liu and Lin earning a unanimous decision against Poland's Julia Szeremeta in the 57-kilogram final.
Post-bout reflections and Los Angeles 2028
Following her final bout against Yang Chengyu, Lin described the personal effort required to return to championship form after two years of scrutiny and time away from the ring.
It was really not easy at all. It is rare to finally reach that point where you see light at the end of the tunnel, and I am simply very grateful to myself that I got through it.
Lin told reporters that securing the Asian Games medal was deeply meaningful to her. She also expressed personal satisfaction with her performance in the final.
I am glad that I managed to achieve this.
When asked by journalists after the award ceremony whether she intended to defend her Olympic title at the XXXIV Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028, Lin declined to answer.
