Lidl Hellas commits 200 million euros to Greek expansion across 2026 and 2027
Lidl Hellas has unveiled a 200 million euro investment plan for 2026 and 2027 to expand its retail network, modernise logistics, and open a dedicated gastronomy centre in Athens.
Investment budget and leadership plans
Lidl Hellas has committed 200 million euros to its operations in Greece for the 2026–2027 period, focusing on retail network expansion, physical infrastructure, technology, and sustainability initiatives. The plan was announced in Athens by Miltos Forozidis, the company's chief executive officer and management board president, during the opening of the Lidl House Athens project in Stoa Arsakeiou. The capital expenditure program follows ongoing efforts by the discount chain to grow its commercial footprint across Greece.
In the next two years we will invest over 200 million euros in Greece, because we believe in Greece and in the Greek consumer. For us, the goal is not simply to fill baskets, but to offer innovative and modern solutions, remaining the most economical cart in Greece.
Network rollout and logistics infrastructure
The retailer's domestic store network currently stands at 234 branches across the country. Under the immediate expansion schedule, four new stores are scheduled to enter operation by the end of 2026, located in Chalandri, Victoria Square, Chaidari, and on the island of Paros. For 2027, the company plans to open five to six additional stores, including a location on the island of Naxos scheduled to open prior to the summer season.
Alongside new store openings, Lidl Hellas modernises more than 50 existing supermarkets each year to upgrade facilities and retail operations. The logistics network is also receiving dedicated capital allocations. The refurbishment and expansion of the regional distribution centre in Trikala will conclude before the end of 2026. In addition, the grocer has initiated development of a new distribution hub in Elefsina, with construction scheduled for completion by 2030.
- Greek product exports through Lidl's European network surpass 600 million euros across 19 countries.
- Inauguration of the 670-square-metre Lidl House Athens experiential centre at Stoa Arsakeiou.
- Completion of Trikala distribution centre renovation and opening of four new stores in Attica and Paros.
- Launch of five to six new supermarkets, including an outlet on the island of Naxos before summer.
- Scheduled completion of the newly developed distribution centre in Elefsina.
Supplier partnerships and export volumes
Domestic procurement remains central to the supermarket chain's local business model. Approximately 67% of the annual turnover recorded by Lidl Hellas comes directly from Greek suppliers, linking the discount chain to domestic agricultural producers and food processors.
Beyond domestic sales, more than 400 Greek producers distribute their goods internationally through the wider European store network of the Lidl group. In 2025, the total value of Greek food products exported through this international logistics chain exceeded 600 million euros. These shipments included more than 7,000 truckloads of Greek fresh fruits and vegetables dispatched across 19 European markets.
Experiential centre in central Athens
As part of its ongoing capital program, the retailer opened Lidl House Athens inside the renovated Stoa Arsakeiou complex in central Athens. The facility covers 670 square metres and is designed as an educational and experiential hub focused on sustainability and regional food culture.
The venue does not operate as a standard grocery store, serving instead to connect urban shoppers with Greek agricultural output and culinary traditions through dedicated demonstrations and informational programming.
It is a new home where visitors do not shop in the traditional way, but learn about the history, the place, and the tastes of our homeland, with the Greek table presented in its best version as a way of life.
