Robert Lewandowski threw the ceremonial first pitch before a play-off game of the Chicago White Sox against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field in Chicago, in game four of the American League Division Series. The Polish striker wore a personalised White Sox shirt with his name and the number 9. Before stepping onto the mound he practised throws with the club mascot, then delivered the pitch toward the catcher while thousands of fans applauded.
Lewandowski attended with his wife Anna and their daughters Klara and Laura. Actor Brendan Hunt, who plays coach Beard in Ted Lasso, was also a guest at the stadium. Lewandowski spoke after the ceremony about the energy of the baseball stadium and the passion with which Chicago follows the sport. The family moved to the United States in summer 2026 and regularly attends Chicago Fire matches.
Social media and reaction
The White Sox posted the visit online with the phrase "From the pitch to a first pitch!", a play on words referring to the football pitch and the ceremonial throw. Chicago Fire also published its reaction. Lewandowski shared photographs of the throw and wrote under one of them:

The White Sox lost on Thursday and face a decisive game in Cleveland on Saturday to reach the American League final, the stage before the World Series. The game in which Lewandowski threw the first pitch ended 9:5 for the Guardians.
