Forest fire near Lepe's Islantilla Golf urbanization controlled after overnight operation
The blaze broke out Monday evening near residential homes, triggering road closures and a large-scale response; it was declared stabilized the same night and fully controlled Tuesday morning.
Fire outbreak and escalation
A forest fire broke out at 20:10 on Monday, July 27, near the Islantilla Golf urbanization in Lepe, Huelva, close to residential areas. The regional Plan Infoca initially dispatched 16 ground crew, one fire engine, one semi-heavy helicopter, and two ground-loading air tankers. As flames spread through dense pine and scrubland, authorities declared phase 1 emergency, and the mayor ordered the precautionary closure of the A-5076 access road into Islantilla from the Cash Lepe roundabout.

Stabilization and road reopening
Around 22:00, Regional Minister Antonio Sanz announced the fire had been stabilized and downgraded from phase 1 to pre-emergency (phase 0). At that point the deployed force had grown to 45 ground personnel, two fire engines, two semi-heavy helicopters, and two ground-loading planes. The A-5076 was reopened, and local police from Lepe and Isla Cristina, civil protection, the provincial firefighters' consortium, the Guardia Civil, and Infoca units all coordinated the response. By Tuesday morning, just 10 ground crew and a single engine remained for mop-up.
Mayor's remarks on response and land management
Mayor Adolfo Verano praised the swift deployment of air assets, which he said were essential given the terrain: "Without the four aerial units it would have been very difficult," because the density of trees prevented fire engines from entering. He also criticized what he saw as a systemic failure: "There is no agility in requiring landowners to clean those plots, and that makes any small incident grow into a very dangerous fire, especially near a residential area." The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, Infoca had extinguished another forest fire at 19:08 in the Buenavista area of Lucena del Puerto, also in Huelva province. That blaze was the second in that municipality in less than a week, underscoring a period of heightened fire activity in the region.
