RC Lens fires coach Dino Toppmöller after six matches over staff dispute

Staff dispute triggers sudden dismissal

RC Lens dismissed head coach Dino Toppmöller on Tuesday following a dispute over the structure and personnel of the club's technical staff. The 45-year-old German manager departed the French club after three months and six competitive fixtures in charge. The conflict emerged when club leadership informed Toppmöller of its decision to dismiss assistant coach Nelson Morgado, who had worked alongside him since 2017. Club management reported that Morgado had clashed with French members of the backroom staff after demanding greater intensity and commitment during training operations. Toppmöller refused to accept the club's unilateral intervention into his coaching staff, prompting Lens executives to terminate the contracts of the head coach and his two assistants.

As Dino Toppmöller could not align with these structural changes, the club made the responsible decision to terminate his tenure, as well as that of his two assistants.

On-pitch results across six fixtures

Toppmöller arrived at Lens in June on a contract running through 2028, succeeding Pierre Sage at a club that finished second in Ligue 1 and won the French Cup last season. The German coach pledged an attacking style of play, opening his tenure with a 1-0 victory over Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the French Super Cup, despite playing the entire second half with ten men. Lens then defeated Auxerre 5-2 at home in their league opener before suffering two consecutive league defeats. In continental competition, Lens opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 away victory against Slavia Prague, recovering from a 2-1 deficit in the 88th minute with two stoppage-time goals. On Sunday, Lens rallied from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Le Mans, leaving the club in tenth place with four points from four league matches.

Youth integration during squad injuries

Throughout his brief tenure, Toppmöller faced extensive squad limitations, managing recent fixtures without six regular starters due to injuries and fitness recovery. Club president Joseph Oughourlian telephoned Toppmöller late at night following the European victory in Prague to offer congratulations for the comeback. To compensate for missing senior players, Toppmöller integrated young academy players into the starting lineup. He fielded a three-man central defense featuring 21-year-old Souleymane Sagnan, 18-year-old Kyllian Antonio, and 21-year-old Ismaëlo Ganiou. Midfield roles were assigned to 19-year-old Andrija Bulatovic and 16-year-old Mezian Mesloub, a youth development approach endorsed by general director Benjamin Parrot and sporting director Jean-Louis Leca before the coaching staff dispute escalated on Monday.

Interim leadership and next steps

Lens confirmed that Toppmöller agreed to waive a substantial portion of his contractual severance pay following the termination. Assistant coach Yannick Cahuzac will take temporary charge of first-team duties alongside Bilal Hamdi for Friday's Ligue 1 match away at AS Monaco. Cahuzac joined the technical staff in June and had been considered by club hierarchy as a prospective future head coach. The dismissal concludes Toppmöller's third managerial stint outside Germany, having previously coached F91 Dudelange in Luxembourg and Royal Excelsior Virton in Belgium before serving as assistant at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. He had guided Eintracht Frankfurt to a third-place Bundesliga finish in the 2024–2025 season before his dismissal in January.
