Leiria to host Taça da Liga final four for seventh consecutive year in January 2027
The Portuguese league confirmed Leiria will host the 20th Taça da Liga final four in January 2027, retaining the event at the reconstructed Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa.
Venue confirmation and anniversary
Leiria will host the final four of the Taça da Liga for the seventh consecutive year, Portuguese football authorities confirmed on Wednesday at the Estádio Municipal Dr. Magalhães Pessoa. The 2026/27 tournament is the 20th edition of the competition, which was established in the 2007/08 season. The semi-finals will take place on Tuesday, 5 January 2027, and Wednesday, 6 January 2027, followed by the final on Saturday, 9 January 2027. Organizers also presented an updated trophy design for the anniversary edition, placing an armillary sphere prominently at the top of the silverware. Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional president Reinaldo Teixeira affirmed that the league declined offers from other candidate cities to keep the event in Leiria.
There were several municipalities interested in the competition, but we decided not to listen to any other.
Recovery from storm damage
The decision to return to Leiria follows severe damage caused to the municipal stadium by Storm Kristin on 28 January 2026, just 18 days after the previous final was held at the venue. Leiria Mayor Gonçalo Lopes recalled that January 2026 brought contrasting fortunes to the city, moving from hosting the competition to coping with the destruction of the stadium. Municipal authorities expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown to local club U. Leiria during the recovery period. In turn, Leiria is now assisting SCU Torreense by offering the venue for their European competition matches. Teixeira stated that after the destruction caused to the stadium and the local population, the league had no desire to organize the decisive stage anywhere else.
Match schedule and final-eight format
The 2026/27 competition begins on 27 October with an eight-team quarter-final round to determine the four finalists heading to Leiria. Sporting will play Marítimo in the opening quarter-final on 27 October at 20:15, followed by FC Porto facing Académico de Viseu on 28 October at 20:30. The quarter-final round concludes on 29 October with Braga hosting Famalicão at 18:45 and Benfica playing Gil Vicente at 20:45. Vitória SC, who won the tournament in the 2025/26 season, will not retain the title after failing to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Economic impact and format changes
The upcoming edition will be the last to feature the current eight-team knockout system. Starting in the 2027/28 season, the Taça da Liga will expand to include all professional teams across the league system, with clubs participating in European competitions entering at the quarter-final stage. Teixeira noted that staging the tournament abroad remains off the table for the immediate future. According to a study by the Instituto Português de Administração de Marketing, the economic impact of the final four is estimated at approximately €16 million. The previous edition drew about 50,000 spectators to Leiria and generated 36 million visits and digital interactions. The tournament will continue its community programming, including fan zones and social initiatives for children and hospitals.
