RB Leipzig has reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea for the permanent transfer of Spanish striker Marc Guiu. The 20-year-old forward is set to sign a long-term contract with the Bundesliga club running through 2031, pending the completion of a standard medical examination. While Chelsea initially sought a fee in the region of £25 million during negotiations, the London club lowered its valuation earlier in the week, bringing the agreed sum definitively below €20 million. As part of the arrangement between the two clubs, Chelsea is expected to retain a sell-on clause that entitles them to a percentage of any future transfer fee if Leipzig sells the player. Although the main terms have been established, German sources have noted that final paperwork and formal procedures remain to be concluded before the deal becomes official.

Guiu's development and Chelsea record

Guiu originally developed in Barcelona's La Masia youth academy, where he made seven senior appearances for the Catalan side's first team. Chelsea signed the Spain Under-21 international in July 2024 after activating a €6 million (approximately £5 million) release clause in his contract, committing him to a six-year deal. Over the course of his two seasons at Stamford Bridge, the striker accumulated 29 appearances across all competitions and scored eight goals. Six of those goals came during Chelsea's victorious 2024–2025 UEFA Conference League campaign, where he featured prominently in the group stages before a hamstring injury sidelined him for the knockout phase. Last season, Chelsea turned down permanent purchase offers from external clubs in favor of domestic development, sending him on loan to Sunderland. That spell was cut short after less than a month due to an injury crisis in Chelsea's attack, leaving Guiu with two or three outings for the Championship club before returning to London, where he made eight Premier League appearances and started only once.

Tactical shifts under Xabi Alonso

The forward's impending departure is part of a substantial overhaul of Chelsea's attacking lineup under head coach Xabi Alonso. Guiu was omitted from the club's pre-season tour travelling squad and trained away from the main first-team group throughout the summer after being informed that he did not fit into Alonso's tactical framework. The Athletic had reported on 7 July that Guiu was expected to leave Stamford Bridge during the current window. With this transfer, Guiu becomes the third centre-forward to leave Chelsea in the same window, following Nicolas Jackson's move to Aston Villa and Liam Delap's transfer to Nottingham Forest. Chelsea's front line has been reshaped around Joao Pedro, who established himself as the first-choice striker during his debut season, supplemented by the summer arrivals of Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck.

Leipzig's pursuit and related roster adjustments

Leipzig's acquisition of Guiu concludes a multi-year pursuit, with the German side having tracked the young forward on their transfer shortlist for several seasons. Leipzig finalized the terms after overcoming rival interest from Italian club SSC Napoli, which had also explored a move for the Spanish striker in recent weeks. Alongside Guiu's departure, Chelsea has undertaken other squad adjustments to manage registration quotas, including the recall of Ecuadorian midfielder Kendry Paez from a loan spell at Argentine club River Plate. Paez's return was executed to free up an international loan slot, with the London club intending to arrange a fresh loan for the midfielder, potentially with an English team.
