Legia Warsaw signs Ukrainian forward Bohdan Wjunnyk on loan with purchase option

Transfer agreement and contract terms

Legia Warsaw completed the signing of 24-year-old Ukrainian forward Bohdan Wjunnyk on Friday, 4 September 2026. The player arrives from Lechia Gdańsk on a loan deal valid until the end of the 2026/2027 season, with the agreement containing an option for a permanent transfer. Wjunnyk will wear shirt number 27 for the capital club. The forward had attracted interest from other Polish clubs in late August, including a formal offer from Korona Kielce, but expressed a clear preference to work under Legia manager Marek Papszun.

I turned down Korona. I respect the club from Kielce and the offer they made me. They are very good people, but the truth is that I only want to join Legia Warsaw. Legia is Legia. In addition, Marek Papszun wants me there. I hope the clubs manage to reach an agreement.

Attack reshuffle following Rajović departure

The transfer directly follows Legia's decision to loan 27-year-old Danish striker Mileta Rajović to Danish Superliga leaders FC Midtjylland earlier in the week. Rajović faced criticism from supporters in Warsaw for a lack of efficiency in front of goal. Sporting director Fredi Bobić noted that Rajović's exit created an immediate vacancy in the squad's frontline that required reinforcement. Bobić stated that although Wjunnyk can operate in several attacking positions, head coach Marek Papszun intends to use him primarily as a striker.

Bohdan can definitely help the team; let us give him time to settle in and adapt. He has great potential that we and the coaching staff must bring out. After loaning out Mileta Rajović, it was clear to us that we had to acquire a new player for this position and fill it to achieve our goals for this season.

Player profile and career history

Born in Kharkiv, Wjunnyk developed in Ukrainian football academies before joining Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won a domestic league title and debuted in the UEFA Champions League. He gained international tournament experience with the Ukraine under-21 national team, winning a bronze medal at the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Outside Ukraine, Wjunnyk played in Switzerland for FC Zurich and in Austria for Grazer AK before moving to Lechia Gdańsk in 2024. Over two and a half years in Poland, he recorded 57 appearances and 10 goals in the Ekstraklasa, though Lechia suffered relegation at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

Domestic standing and season context

Wjunnyk enters the squad as Legia seeks stability following an early exit from domestic cup competition. On Tuesday, Legia lost 0:3 away to Motor Lublin in the opening round of the Polish Cup. The Warsaw club is not competing in European tournaments this season, leaving domestic league fixtures as its sole competitive focus. In the Ekstraklasa standings, Legia occupies second place with 12 points collected from six matches, trailing league leaders Lech Poznań, who hold 13 points and an unplayed match in hand.
