Sunderland strike inside two minutes
Sunderland took the lead at the Bułgarska Stadium in the second minute. Mateusz Lis played a loose pass to Michał Gurgul, Nilson Angulo intercepted the ball near the penalty area and fed Timur Tuterow, who headed past the Lech goalkeeper from close range. Terry Yegbe came back to try to block the move but could not stop it. The goal came 80 seconds into the match.
A tight first half
Sunderland kept the pressure on before the break. Granit Xhaka's long-range effort was parried by Lis, and Malick Fofana's follow-up struck the woodwork. Lis also made saves against Angulo and Nordi Mukiele. Lech's best chance came from Daniel Hakans, who was through one-on-one with the keeper but sent the ball wide of the post. The score stayed 1:0 at half-time.
Lech's equaliser
Lech gradually took control after the restart, with Niels Frederiksen's side testing the Sunderland defence while Régis Le Bris's team kept looking for a second goal. Luis Palma and Leo Bengtsson came on for Lech in the 62nd minute. Bengtsson missed a good opportunity a few minutes after entering. In the 71st minute he reached a loose ball in a crowded penalty area after a corner and struck it just above the ground into the net. The score sheet gives the goal as the 70th minute. Moments later Robin Roefs stopped a strike from Patrik Walemark and then a header from Gurgul, keeping the score at 1:1.
What the draw means for Lech
The result is Lech's first point in the Europa League and its first goal in the competition this season. The club had lost 0:4 at Crystal Palace and 0:4 at Bayer Leverkusen in its opening two league-phase games. One report says Lech sits at the bottom of the table. Lech still has five league-phase matches to play, against Benfica, Royal Union Saint-Gilloise, Ferencvaros, Torreense and OFI Crete. The next fixture is away to Benfica in Lisbon, a club where Jakub Kamiński plays. Balazs Berke from Hungary refereed the match in front of 34,606 spectators, and Kevin Danso of Sunderland received the only yellow card.
