Hospital fire in Le Mans leaves one patient critical and ten lightly injured

The fire

Around 12:50 PM on Sunday 9 August 2026, an alert was raised at the Centre hospitalier du Mans in western France after a fire broke out in a patient room on the third floor of the Madeleine-Brès building, in the pneumology-infectiology department. The fire lasted only a few minutes before being brought under control by the hospital's own fire safety team and municipal firefighters, whose station is located just 500 metres from the hospital. Colonel Yann Ageorges reported that the first responder pair quickly extracted the victim and then proceeded to extinguish the fire in the room.

Large resources were deployed for the intervention: 71 firefighters aboard 31 vehicles responded, along with a SMUR emergency medical team. An earlier report from the same outlet, published at 1:52 PM, cited 15 vehicles on scene. The hospital, which employs 4,800 staff and operates 1,500 beds, evacuated 140 people from the affected area. Sixty patients were hospitalised in the department at the time of the fire. The fire was confined to a single room, with adjacent rooms sustaining no impact.

The victims

The patient occupying the room where the fire started was severely injured. Sources give conflicting ages for the man: Ouest France reports him as 57 years old, while Franceinfo, Le Soir and RTBF report 59. He had been hospitalised in the pneumology-infectiology service for several days. His condition was judged incompatible with transfer to a specialised burn unit, and he remained in absolute emergency with his vital prognosis described as "very clearly engaged." An initial report from Ouest France at 1:52 PM spoke of two seriously injured, but all subsequent reports confirmed one critical case and ten minor injuries.

Ten additional people were treated for smoke inhalation: two patients and eight healthcare professionals. Emergency responders assessed their condition as presenting "no seriousness whatsoever." All ten were taken care of under relative emergency for intoxications.

Investigation and hospital response

A judicial investigation was opened to determine the cause of the fire. The prosecutor of the Republic of Le Mans visited the site in the afternoon. Scientific police are analysing the origin. Guillaume Laurent, director general of the hospital, outlined the possible causes under examination.

“I will remain extremely cautious, the origin may be linked to equipment but it can also happen that certain patients do not respect the rules such as not smoking in the rooms. This is what is being analysed by the scientific police.”

The white plan, which organises continuity of care during a crisis, was activated in the afternoon. Hospital activities otherwise continued normally, according to the direction. The evacuation of 140 people was carried out without reported complications, and the hospital's 4,800 employees and 1,500 beds remained operational outside the affected wing.
