A fire ignited in a restaurant on the market square of Lauterbach, a town of 14,000 in the Vogelsbergkreis district of Hesse, on the evening of Wednesday, 29 July 2026. The flames spread extremely quickly to neighbouring buildings, all of them half-timbered houses that lean against the old town wall. A police spokesperson described the rapid escalation.

Because of the narrowness and the fact that these are half-timbered houses, it jumped over.
Later in the evening the fire was brought under control, but the combination of wind and residual heat kept embers dangerous. Crews remained on site through the night to extinguish hotspots.

Damage and injuries
By the early morning of 30 July, police confirmed that five people had been injured by smoke gases: two emergency workers and three residents. Three houses were directly affected by the fire, but heat and water from the firefighting operation left a total of five houses uninhabitable. Some of the buildings were at risk of partial collapse. The fire service gave an initial damage estimate of at least €5 million.

The damaged houses are predominantly from the 17th and 18th centuries. They form a long row against the old town wall, which dates to 1266. Investigation and aftermath
The cause of the fire remained unclear as of Thursday morning. Police have not indicated whether the restaurant where the fire started was open at the time. Structural assessments of the affected buildings are expected once the site is safe to enter. The town of Lauterbach faces a lengthy recovery, with five families displaced and a prominent corner of its historic market square scarred.
