HBO Max series Lanterns expands DC mystery with Sinestro reveal and 48-hour alien ultimatum

Rushville conspiracy and the Manhunter threat

The second episode of the HBO Max superhero drama series Lanterns, titled "Trust Fall," deepens the Midwestern murder investigation led by veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his trainee John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Set primarily in 2016, a decade before a flash-forward sequence depicts Jordan suffering a fatal gunshot wound at local bleachers, the narrative tracks an extraterrestrial mystery in Rushville, Nebraska. Jordan discovers that metal detectors installed at a high school football stadium and a local town hall are advanced alien-tracking devices capable of detecting extraterrestrial biology. The victims of a stadium shooting are revealed as an alien scout team searching for a genocidal shapeshifter known as a Manhunter. Local figures, including rancher William Macon (Garret Dillahunt), his son Billy Macon (Jason Ritter), and Sheriff Kane (Kelly Macdonald), urge Jordan to abandon the inquiry, but extraterrestrial forces establish a 48-hour deadline to deliver the hidden Manhunter before attacking the town.

Stewart's Coast City mission and construct powers

While Jordan inspects the morgue and steals extraterrestrial corpses to test the stadium sensors, he sends Stewart cross-country to Coast City on an errand designed to evaluate his abilities. During flight practice, Stewart fails to take airborne flight but spontaneously manifests a green sparrow construct that remains active independently even after Jordan reclaims the power ring. In Coast City, Stewart visits Jordan's sparsely furnished mansion, a gift received after rescuing a wealthy benefactor's child, to retrieve the power battery that provides the ring with its 24-hour charge. Stewart locates the lantern inside a voice-activated safe housing a pocket dimension and tends to Earl, an extraterrestrial carnivorous plant kept in Jordan's greenhouse. Before Stewart can return to Nebraska, masked assailants tase and abduct him in a transport van, forcing him to fight his way out onto an interstate highway.

Sinestro's prison confrontation and creative rationale

The episode concludes with Jordan breaking Green Lantern protocol to travel into space and consult his imprisoned former mentor, the dishonourably discharged supervillain Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen). Despite his confinement, Sinestro reveals direct awareness of Stewart's training on Earth, creating tension around Jordan's reluctance to cede his ring. Series showrunner Chris Mundy and executive producer Damon Lindelof described Sinestro as a psychological foil for Jordan.

The idea that Sinestro is out there is really, really important to understanding who Hal is. No one is gonna be able to poke at Hal's reluctance to cede the ring more than Sinestro will.

Chandler noted the challenge of managing the scene's extensive dialogue, drawing upon personal reflections to convey the emotional dynamic between Jordan and his disgraced former mentor.

There's this huge piece of dialogue between the two of us. I wasn't quite sure what to do with all that dialogue. I understand the story and all, but to make it personal, I found myself, as we were running the scene, going into, personal life, because I'm trying to ground myself with having this conversation with him, trying to find something to make the three minutes of talking worthy of people sitting there. I don't want them to and go and get a ham sandwich.
