British tourists swimming in Lake Annecy found a handgun resting at a depth of roughly two metres on 20 August 2026. The 2012 Chevaline killings
The murders took place on 5 September 2012 on an isolated forest road near the village of Chevaline in Haute-Savoie. Saad al-Hilli, a 50-year-old Iraqi-born satellite engineer from Surrey, was shot dead in the driver's seat of his BMW. His 47-year-old wife Iqbal and her 74-year-old mother Suhaila al-Allaf were also killed inside the vehicle by multiple gunshots to the head. Sylvain Mollier, a local French cyclist riding past the scene, was shot and killed beside the car. The gunman fired 21 rounds in under two minutes, striking the victims 17 times. The couple's seven-year-old daughter survived with head injuries after being struck with the firearm, while their four-year-old daughter remained hidden under her mother's body for eight hours until technicians arrived.

Forensic tests on the Luger pistol
Investigators established early in the inquiry that the shooter used a rare Luger P06 or P06/29 Parabellum 7.65mm pistol, an arm issued to Swiss soldiers between 1909 and 1947. A broken grip fragment recovered from the 2012 crime scene provides a direct physical reference for comparison. French media noted that 7,680 pistols of that variant were fitted with reddish Canevasit grips during the 1930s. Technicians will test whether the recovered gun is missing that exact piece, while checking barrel rifling, any legible serial numbers, and biological traces. Former Chambéry public prosecutor Jacques Dallest noted the importance of verifying the caliber and grip construction before proceeding.
“Even if it is rusted, experts will quickly see if it is the right one. At Chevaline, technicians found a wooden plate, which is located on the grips of the weapons. The expert appraisal will quickly tell if it is missing on the weapon found in Lake Annecy.”
Challenges in tracing vintage firearms
Because the weapon spent years underwater, corrosion presents significant obstacles for laboratory analysis. Even if ballistics confirm the pistol was used in the killings, tracing its ownership chain across decades remains difficult due to the age of the model. Former gendarmerie officer and arms trafficking specialist Jean-Charles Antoine-Noirel explained the investigative hurdles associated with antique military weapons.
“This weapon could have circulated for several decades and been stored at a grandfather's house or with an owner or in a club and then been stolen, sold illegally, or given away. And that is where we see the full complexity of tracing a network.”
The Nanterre cold case unit stated that laboratory assessments will take several weeks to complete.
