Chelsea sign Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52m on six-year deal

Chelsea announced the signing of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace on Thursday, 30 July 2026. The 26-year-old France international defender has agreed a six-year contract that runs until 2032. The fee is reported at £52 million (€60 million), making him the club's second-most expensive signing of the summer after Morgan Rogers. Lacroix becomes the first player aged 26 or older that Chelsea have paid a transfer fee for since the summer of 2022, reflecting a shift in recruitment strategy under manager Xabi Alonso towards more experienced players.
Lacroix's rise and Palace success
Lacroix began his career at Sochaux's academy, making 28 senior appearances before moving to VfL Wolfsburg in 2020. He spent four seasons in the Bundesliga, accumulating 130 appearances. Crystal Palace signed him in August 2024 for £18 million, and he quickly established himself as one of the Premier League's most consistent centre-backs. Over two seasons at Selhurst Park, he made 98 appearances in all competitions. Last season he played 55 matches, contributing three goals and three assists, and helped Palace win the UEFA Conference League (the club's first European trophy), the FA Cup, and the Community Shield.

International career
Lacroix made his senior debut for France in March 2026 and was selected for the World Cup squad. He featured in three matches at the tournament, including a start in the third-place play-off, where France lost 6-4 to England to finish fourth. He now has seven caps for his country.

Upon signing, Lacroix expressed his excitement.
I am really happy to be part of this beautiful club. Everyone knows the legend of Chelsea, its tradition of winning, and to be a part of that is a proud moment.
He added that conversations with Alonso and French teammates already at Chelsea, such as Malo Gusto, convinced him it was the right move.
I think it's the best move for me because it's the best club in the world. When I spoke with the manager, I saw that we have the same direction and desire for this club. We want to win. When you see the quality of the players here, everything we have around the club, it's something that we can achieve. The ambition is to lift trophies, and I can't wait to contribute.
Chelsea's summer rebuild
Lacroix is Chelsea's fifth signing of a busy window. The club had already brought in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, Atalanta defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, and Sporting Lisbon's Geovany Quenda. Chelsea are also close to completing deals for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck and former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who is a free agent after his Brentford contract was terminated. The recruitment drive follows a disappointing 10th-place finish last season and an acknowledgement from the hierarchy that the squad needed more experience. The club had missed out on defensive target Jeremy Jacquet in January, and Levi Colwill missed almost all of last season with an ACL injury.
What's next
Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign away at Fulham on 24 August. Lacroix is expected to slot straight into Alonso's defence alongside Wesley Fofana or Trevoh Chalobah, adding pace and aerial ability to a back line that struggled for consistency last term.
