Los Javis release Lorca-inspired La bola negra in Spain following Cannes win and Oscar submission
Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi bring their Federico García Lorca-inspired film La bola negra to Spanish cinemas on 25 September 2026 following award wins at Cannes and Toronto.
Theatrical release and box office demand
Spanish cinema chains expanded their scheduled screenings ahead of the theatrical release of La bola negra on Friday, 25 September 2026. Pre-sale figures across Spain exceeded initial projections, with cinema chains adding extra weekend showtimes to meet ticket demand. Pol Hernández, marketing and communication manager at Mooby Cinemas, stated that advance ticket sales in their six Barcelona venues nearly doubled those recorded for other releases this year. The Friday evening screening at Barcelona's Aribau theatre, which features an online question-and-answer session with the directors, sold out its 1,000-seat main auditorium. Cine Yelmo programming manager Antonio Boluda reported more than 100 sold-out sessions across the chain's network prior to opening day.
We are, therefore, facing one of those premieres that transcend the release of a film and become a genuine event for movie theatres.
Three timelines inspired by Lorca's unfinished work
The film, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, draws its premise from a four-page unfinished manuscript written by Federico García Lorca before his assassination in 1936, alongside Alberto Conejero's theatrical play La piedra oscura. The narrative connects three distinct eras: 1932, 1937, and 2017. The 1932 storyline portrays the rejection of a young homosexual man from an exclusive Granada casino through a secret blackball voting ritual. The 1937 Civil War narrative follows Republican prisoner Rafael Rodríguez Rapún (Miguel Bernardeau), who was Lorca's real-life partner and theater secretary in La Barraca, and his interaction with a Nationalist soldier (Guitarricadelafuente). The contemporary 2017 thread follows a playwright (Carlos González) uncovering lost writings while investigating his grandfather's past despite opposition from his mother (Lola Dueñas).

Festival run and awards campaign strategy
La bola negra entered the international festival circuit in May 2026 at the Cannes Film Festival, where Calvo and Ambrossi received the Best Director award before Netflix acquired distribution rights. The Spanish Film Academy selected the film in September 2026 to represent Spain in the Best International Feature category for the 2027 Academy Awards. That selection followed the film winning the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival. For the broader awards campaign, Netflix confirmed that all principal cast members, including Penélope Cruz, Lola Dueñas, Glenn Close, Miguel Bernardeau, and Guitarricadelafuente, will compete exclusively in supporting acting categories rather than leading slots, reflecting the distributed ensemble narrative.
When we won 'Best Director' it gave me peace to feel everything that had happened, because it didn't have to happen. It did not respond to anything other than the film.
Ensemble cast and directorial transition
The project marks the second feature film directed by Calvo and Ambrossi following their 2017 debut La llamada and television productions including Paquita Salas, Veneno, and La Mesías. Musician Guitarricadelafuente makes his screen acting debut playing Sebastian and contributed the original song "La Nieve" to the film's soundtrack. Penélope Cruz appears as Nene, a cabaret performer entertaining troops during the Civil War. The production coincides with the 90th anniversary of Lorca's death, framing his literary and biographical legacy through historical reconstruction and fictional elements. Following promotional obligations in Cannes and Toronto, the directors completed post-festival preparations in August ahead of the nationwide commercial rollout.
