Overnight missile waves hit Kyiv

Russian forces launched at least 14 ballistic missiles at Kyiv in three separate waves shortly after 1:00 local time on 24 September. The strikes triggered air raid sirens across the capital and caused explosions in multiple districts. Falling missile debris damaged the facade and windows of a maternity clinic, killing one person in the facility parking lot and injuring three healthcare workers. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that at least two people died and six were injured in the overnight assault, while emergency responders searched for individuals potentially trapped beneath the rubble of a damaged residential building. Local authorities also reported several fires across the city as air defenses struggled with depleted interceptor stockpiles.

While people were sleeping, flashes of explosions lit up the sky. Once again, the main targets of the attacks were Kyiv and civilian infrastructure, residential buildings, a maternity clinic, as well as energy and logistics infrastructure.

Sustained daytime drone strikes on the capital

The overnight missile bombardment followed a day of continuous aerial attacks on 23 September, during which Kyiv sounded 11 separate air raid alarms. European Union Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova noted that fires broke out in buildings located near the EU mission.

Deadly regional strikes across eastern and southern Ukraine

Russian strikes extended across eastern and southern regions throughout 23 September, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage. In the eastern Donetsk region, aerial bombing killed at least four people and injured four in the frontline settlement of Oleksandrivka, completely destroying a multi-story residential building and damaging 11 others, according to Military Governor Vadym Filashkin. In the Black Sea region of Odesa, Russian strikes hit a commercial cargo vessel sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, killing its Ukrainian captain, while repeated attacks hit warehouses storing food, medicine, and household supplies, Governor Oleh Kiper stated. Additional fatalities and injuries occurred in the Kharkiv region, where one person died in the regional capital and eight were injured in Izyum amid power outages, as well as in Zaporizhzhia, where shelling killed one person in Kushuhum and injured two at a shopping center.

Diplomatic pressure and Moscow military claims

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the attacks during an official visit to the United States, where he met with members of Congress to discuss an expanded sanctions package against Russia. The legislative package carries the name of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who died in July. Zelenskyy urged Western allies to accelerate deliveries of air defense interceptors capable of neutralizing ballistic missiles. In Moscow, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that its forces targeted drone manufacturing facilities, defense enterprises, military data centers, and three logistics hubs in Odesa.
