Real Madrid confirms free signing of Ibrahima Konaté; French defender joins until 2030
The 27-year-old French international arrives on a free transfer after five seasons at Liverpool, becoming the third new face announced this week under returning coach José Mourinho.

The French defender Ibrahima Konaté has been confirmed as Real Madrid’s third signing of the summer, arriving on a free transfer after his Liverpool contract expired. The deal runs for four seasons, until 30 June 2030.

Defensive reinforcement
Konaté is seen as a crucial addition to a defence weakened by the departure of David Alaba and ongoing injury problems with Éder Militao. Last season the club resorted to emergency solutions, fielding Dani Carvajal and Aurélien Tchouaméni in central positions, while young Dean Huijsen failed to meet expectations. With veteran Antonio Rüdiger and the inconsistency of Raúl Asencio, the back line has been a pressing concern.
Florentino Pérez’s campaign promises
The signing was a key promise in Florentino Pérez’s successful re‑election campaign. The president had pledged to bring in Konaté and Dutch full‑back Denzel Dumfries, whose transfer from Inter is expected soon at a cost between €15 million and €20 million. The squad rebuilding began with the appointment of José Mourinho and the arrivals of Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva earlier this week.
Player profile
Standing 1.94 m and weighing 95 kg, Konaté offers the physical presence Madrid have lacked. He made 118 Premier League appearances for Liverpool and featured 36 times in the Champions League. Last season he played 50 matches across all competitions and scored once in the league and once in Europe. With 30 caps for France, he is currently at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Summer plans
Beyond Konaté and Dumfries, Pérez also made a €150 million offer for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, publicly announced and promptly rejected. Midfield remains an area of concern after the retirements of Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos, and further moves are expected.
