Oliver Kahn has urged caution amid the wave of enthusiasm greeting Jürgen Klopp's appointment as head coach of the German national football team. Kahn, the 57-year-old former goalkeeper who won the World Cup runner-up medal in 2002 and later became CEO of Bayern Munich, spoke at the Bastian Schweinsteiger Cup on 25 July 2026. The charity golf tournament provided a platform for the football legend to temper expectations around Klopp's new role.

Kahn elaborated on the structural questions he believes Klopp must address at the German Football Association (DFB).

What kind of players do you want to develop over the coming years? What kind of players do you want at all? How do you want to play football?

Despite his reservations, Kahn said Klopp was a "very experienced man who can certainly achieve something."

Schweinsteiger sieht hohe Erwartungen

Bastian Schweinsteiger, the 2014 World Cup winner and former Germany international, also offered his perspective on the pressure surrounding the new coach. Schweinsteiger acknowledged the high expectations facing Klopp but expressed confidence in his ability.

The expectations are naturally very high. You have to start everything from scratch. That will be a task for him, but he is an excellent coach.

Schweinsteiger added that Klopp was "the right coach for the current situation." He said he hoped the initial wave of optimism would last long enough for Germany to close the gap to the world's best teams.

Jürgen Klopp, 59, took over from Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned a few days after Germany's embarrassing round-of-16 exit against Paraguay at the World Cup. The new coach has a contract with the DFB that runs until 2030. Klopp's previous roles include coaching Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, and most recently serving as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull.

His first competitive matches in charge will be four Nations League fixtures later this year. The schedule opens with an away match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 24 September, followed by a home match against Greece in Augsburg on 27 September. Germany then hosts Serbia in Munich on 1 October, before travelling to Thessaloniki for the return leg against Greece on 4 October.
