King Haakon VIII faces solo duties as Queen Mette-Marit rests until summer 2027
King Haakon VIII will carry out royal responsibilities largely alone as Queen Mette-Marit pauses public duties until summer 2027 and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra returns to university in Australia.
Royal transition in Oslo
Norway's royal household is preparing to resume regular engagements as the official court mourning period for King Harald V concludes on 9 October 2026. King Harald died on 28 August at age 89, followed in September by the death and funeral of his sister, Princess Astrid. King Haakon VIII formally assumed the throne and swore the monarch's oath on 1 September before presiding over the opening of the Norwegian parliament in early October. According to the Royal Court, royal duties will resume gradually while staff manage administrative adjustments tied to the succession. The monarch plans to focus his domestic schedule on civic outreach, hosting community groups and conducting visits related to democracy, nature, business, defense, and social inclusion. Palace officials stated that autumn and winter will proceed without foreign state visits or extensive international travel.
Queen Mette-Marit extends recovery
Queen Mette-Marit, 53, will remain absent from official royal engagements until the summer of 2027 as she continues her rehabilitation from pulmonary surgery. Doctors diagnosed her with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, an incurable condition causing lung scarring and shortness of breath. Her health deteriorated in late spring 2026, placing her on the organ donor waiting list in early June before she received a lung transplant on 17 June. Although she attended King Harald's funeral service, health complications prevented her from attending King Haakon's oath ceremony on 1 September, prompting observation at the National Hospital. She also missed the opening of parliament because of a respiratory infection.
Her Majesty the Queen continues her rehabilitation after her lung transplant and will in principle have no official program until next summer.
The court stated that while Queen Mette-Marit remains absent from the formal calendar, isolated individual public appearances remain possible before summer 2027.
- Crown Princess Mette-Marit receives a diagnosis of chronic pulmonary fibrosis.
- Mette-Marit undergoes a donor lung transplant.
- King Harald V dies at age 89.
- King Haakon VIII takes the royal oath of office.
- The Norwegian royal court concludes its official mourning period.
- Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra returns to the University of Sydney.
- The court trial involving Marius Borg is scheduled to begin.
Academic plans for Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra
Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 22, has supported her father during initial state appearances but will leave Norway in early 2027. She had paused her degree at the University of Sydney in June, transferring to an exchange semester at the University of Oslo to remain close to her mother during surgery. Palace officials confirmed she will attend limited official functions through the winter before resuming her coursework in Australia in February.
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra will continue to give priority to her studies.
Her planned departure in February allows her to resume full-time degree work at the start of the Australian academic term.
Constrained working royal roster
Her departure in February coincides with the scheduled start of a court trial involving King Haakon's stepson, Marius Borg, set for 9 February. Prince Sverre Magnus is also living abroad while attending Forward College in Lisbon, leaving neither of the monarch's children permanently based in Norway. Princess Märtha Louise, 55, previously relinquished her royal duties, narrowing the working royal circle. Haakon will receive official working support from his mother, Queen Sonja, 89, who continues her institutional duties. The sovereign will otherwise fulfill head-of-state obligations largely on his own across the coming months as Queen Mette-Marit recuperates and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra returns to Sydney.
