Alleged Kinahan crime boss Daniel Kinahan extradited from Dubai to Dublin, charged before Special Criminal Court
Daniel Kinahan, alleged leader of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group, was flown from Dubai to Dublin on 9 August 2026 and charged before the Special Criminal Court with directing an organized criminal group between 2015 and 2017.
Extradition and court appearance
Daniel Kinahan, a 49-year-old Irish citizen, was flown from Dubai to Dublin on an Irish government jet on Sunday, 9 August 2026, and taken into investigative custody. He appeared before the Special Criminal Court, where the prosecution charged him with leading an organized criminal group between autumn 2015 and spring 2017. The court ordered him held in a high-security prison until his next scheduled appearance on 5 October. Irish media reported heavy security, with blue-light vehicles arriving at the court building.
His lawyer rejected the characterization of Kinahan as a gangster boss, according to the BBC. The lawyer also stated that his client had no prior convictions.
The Kinahan Organised Crime Group
The Kinahan Organised Crime Group (KOCG), also referred to as the Kinahan Transnational Criminal Organization (KTCO), originated in the 1990s and grew into what authorities consider Ireland's most powerful criminal organization. The Irish police estimate the group's assets at more than one billion euros. According to information from the US State Department, the group initially sold cocaine and heroin from South America in Ireland, then expanded across the United Kingdom and the European mainland. Activities also included money laundering and weapons trafficking, as well as murder.
Daniel Kinahan is identified by investigators in Europe and the United States as the head of the KOCG. The BBC reported that he is the son of the organization's founder. The US Treasury placed him on a sanctions list in April 2022, stating that every member of the KOCG reported to Daniel Kinahan. The US State Department published his nicknames as "Chess", "D", and "Cuz".

Feud and international pursuit
A feud with the rival Hutch Gang from Dublin brought the Kinahan group global attention. In 2016, shots were fired at a Dublin hotel during a boxing event; Daniel Kinahan was the target but survived unharmed. US authorities stated in 2022 that the feud had led to 18 murders. The US government offered a reward of up to five million dollars for information leading to the dismantling of the Kinahan organization or the arrest and conviction of Daniel Kinahan.
The Irish police have pursued KOCG members for ten years with support from authorities in the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States. Kinahan is believed to have directed the group's daily operations from his base in Dubai.
Extradition process
Ireland signed an extradition agreement with the United Arab Emirates in May 2025. Kinahan was arrested in Dubai in April 2026 on a warrant issued by Irish judicial authorities. His objection to extradition was rejected in July 2026, as reported by the Guardian. Dubai had already arrested and extradited another leading KOCG member in 2024; that individual was sentenced in June to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to leading a criminal organization and attempted murder.
