Alleged Irish mafia boss Daniel Kinahan extradited from Dubai, charged in Dublin with directing billion-euro cartel

Daniel Kinahan, 49, was extradited from the United Arab Emirates to Ireland on Sunday, August 9, 2026, arriving at the Casement military aerodrome west of Dublin aboard an Irish government aircraft. A journalist from AFP on the scene reported a helicopter circling the area. Kinahan had been held in Dubai since April, when he was arrested on an Irish warrant after all his appeals against extradition were rejected. Upon arrival, he was brought before the Special Criminal Court of Dublin, which charged him with directing a criminal organization and ordered him held in provisional detention pending a hearing scheduled for October 5. The court, which handles terrorism and organized crime cases, is presided over by three magistrates without a jury.

Kinahan appeared in court wearing tracksuit bottoms, a hoodie, and glasses, flanked by plainclothes police officers, and seemed calm, according to the Irish Mirror. He is specifically accused of directing the activities of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group (KOCG) between October 2015 and April 2017. He will be detained at the high-security Portlaoise prison in central Ireland, which houses some of the country's most prominent inmates.

The KOCG, also known as the "Irish mafia," is accused by the United States and the European Union of running large-scale criminal operations, including drug trafficking and money laundering. Irish police estimate the organization's wealth at over 1 billion euros, making it the most powerful criminal organization in Ireland. The US Treasury Department has described the Kinahan cartel as "one of the most dangerous in the world."

Since 2022, the United States has offered a reward of up to 5 million dollars for information leading to the dismantling of the cartel, and imposed sanctions on Kinahan and other family members identified as cartel leaders. The UAE news agency WAM reported that Kinahan was extradited "at the official request of the Irish authorities, to be prosecuted for offenses related to transnational organized crime, including directing a criminal organization, murder, and drug trafficking."

International cooperation and reactions

The justice ministers of the UAE and Ireland issued a joint statement on Sunday describing Kinahan as "one of the most prominent persons sought by justice for transnational organized crime." The two ministers had discussed the extradition in a recent phone call, according to WAM.

The head of the Irish police, Justin Kelly, said the arrest demonstrates the determination of Irish authorities and their international partners, including Dubai police, to target transnational organized crime groups. Kinahan had moved to Dubai in 2016 from Spain, following the murder of one of his associates and an assassination attempt targeting him in a Dublin hotel.

Background and personal profile

Born in Dublin in 1977, Daniel Kinahan is reportedly the eldest son of Christy Kinahan, a convicted drug trafficker considered the founder of the family criminal organization. According to Sky News, Daniel Kinahan grew up in a disadvantaged neighborhood marked by poverty and crime, an environment that he said sparked his passion for boxing. He served as an advisor to British boxer Tyson Fury until 2020, helping arrange several of his fights.

In 2016, Kinahan ran a series of unusual businesses in Ireland, ranging from interior design firms to a cleaning company, for which he never filed accounts, Sky News reported. Since that same year, he had been "living openly" in Dubai with his wife and children, according to the Irish Times.

A pattern of extraditions

Kinahan is the second senior figure of the cartel to be extradited from Dubai. Sean McGovern was returned to Ireland in 2025 and sentenced in June 2026 to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty. McGovern's case was linked to the murder of an Irishman in 2016 and was part of a long and violent feud between the Kinahan cartel and the rival Hutch gang, based in Dublin.
