A Paris civil court on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, awarded reality television personality Kim Kardashian a symbolic 1 euro ($1.15) in damages over the 2016 armed robbery at her hotel suite. Kardashian had requested the single euro rather than financial restitution, seeking formal legal recognition of the harm caused during the attack. Her stylist Simone Harouche, who was present in the building during the robbery, also sought and received 1 euro in damages.

The court awarded larger sums to other civil plaintiffs involved in the case. Former Hôtel de Pourtalès receptionist Abderrahmane Ouatiki, who was held at gunpoint during the break-in, received 109,516 euros after initially seeking 550,000 euros plus interest. The hotel itself, an exclusive residence in the 8th arrondissement of Paris that rents suites and entire floors, received 50,000 euros in damages after seeking 100,000 euros for reputational harm.

The 2016 Paris Fashion Week break-in

The robbery occurred in the early morning hours of 3 October 2016, while Kardashian was staying in the French capital for Paris Fashion Week. Five men dressed in police attire and wearing ski masks forced entry into the Hôtel de Pourtalès building. The assailants confronted Ouatiki at gunpoint in the reception area and forced him to unlock Kardashian's private suite.

Once inside the room, two armed assailants restrained Kardashian using plastic zip ties and duct tape across her mouth before placing her in the bathroom. The thieves escaped with a jewelry haul valued at approximately 9 million euros to 10 million dollars. Among the stolen items was a 20-carat diamond engagement ring valued at 4 million dollars, given to her by her then-husband, rapper Kanye West (now known as Ye). Most of the stolen jewelry was never recovered by French authorities.

Criminal convictions and sentencing

The civil damages ruling follows the conclusion of the criminal proceedings in May 2025, when a Paris court convicted eight defendants on charges including armed robbery, kidnapping, and criminal association. French media dubbed the group "les papys braqueurs" (the grandpa robbers) because six of the defendants were between 60 and 70 years old at the time of their trial, with an average age of approximately 60.

The ringleader of the group, Aomar Ait Khedache, who was 69 years old during the 2025 trial, received a three-year prison sentence. None of the convicted men returned to prison following the May 2025 verdicts, as their sentences were offset by the time they had already served in pre-trial detention. During the 2025 criminal proceedings, Kardashian testified that she had feared for her life during the attack, though she told Ait Khedache that she had forgiven him while noting that the trauma remained.
