Giorgos Karameros resigns from SYRIZA and parliament, declares support for Alexis Tsipras's ELAS
Giorgos Karameros, SYRIZA MP for East Attica, announced his resignation from the party and his parliamentary seat on Saturday, citing his support for Alexis Tsipras's new political venture, ELAS.
Resignation announcement
Giorgos Karameros, a SYRIZA MP and journalist, announced his resignation from the party and his parliamentary seat on the morning of Saturday, 4 July 2026. He stated that he had already informed SYRIZA president Sokratis Famellos of his decision. Karameros was elected to parliament in 2023, having previously been active in local government and political ecology.
I informed President Sokratis Famellos a short while ago of my decision to resign from the parliamentary seat of East Attica and from every party capacity.
Support for Tsipras and ELAS
In his social media post, Karameros made clear that his departure was driven by allegiance to former prime minister Alexis Tsipras and his new party, ELAS (ΕΛ.Α.Σ). He said he had supported the initiative from the start and that his backing had only grown stronger.
From the beginning I supported Alexis Tsipras's initiative and subsequently the formation of ELAS, which create prospects for Greece. This support remains and is in fact strengthened as a political assessment.
He added that he would continue as an active citizen, a "simple soldier" in the necessary progressive coalition of social democracy, the left, and political ecology.
Returning the seat
Karameros stressed that he was returning his parliamentary seat to the party, framing it as a matter of principle. He argued that power is not property but a trust, and that consistency, reliability, and dignity are non-negotiable values.
I choose as a minimal example the return of the seat to the party, because any power is not property but a trust. I am not abandoning. I will continue to fight for this trust with respect for all.
He said he would officially inform the Speaker of Parliament by the end of the week, after settling procedural matters with his staff.
Political context
Karameros's resignation is the first by a SYRIZA MP since the creation of ELAS, although several party officials had already moved to the new venture. His departure underscores the ongoing realignment within the Greek left, as Tsipras's breakaway party seeks to consolidate support ahead of the next electoral cycle.
