The crash
U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur was injured in a two-vehicle crash in Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday. The Democratic lawmaker was a passenger in a car on her way to a church service when it was struck by another vehicle. Police responded to the scene at the intersection of Detroit and Central Avenues at approximately 10:48 a.m. EDT. The Toledo Police Department described the incident as a hit-and-run, or "hit-skip," and said the investigation is in its "initial stage" and remains ongoing.
Kaptur and one other person were transported to a nearby hospital. Her office said she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Kaptur's office issued a statement thanking first responders from the Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly at the scene, as well as the medical professionals caring for those involved. The congresswoman also expressed gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who contacted her after the crash and said she looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.
Kaptur was in Toledo during the summer recess of the House of Representatives.

Kaptur, 80, has served in the House for 43 years and is the longest-serving female lawmaker in the chamber's history, according to House records. She is seeking re-election this fall against Republican Derek Merrin, a former member of the Ohio legislature. Merrin, who is backed by Donald Trump, lost to Kaptur in 2024 by just under 2,400 votes.
