Venue dispute in Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg's Gazprom Arena announced on 24 August 2026 that it had not signed any rental agreements for two planned concerts by Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. The 80,000-capacity venue stated that the performances, scheduled for 10 and 11 October, cannot proceed on its premises because no lease contract exists. The announcement followed promotional messages published by the venue on 17 August advertising the appearances. More than 100,000 tickets had reportedly been sold for the two dates, including VIP passes priced at 1,390 pounds (nearly 2,000 euros). The Moscow-based concert promoter Say Agency disputed that the shows were canceled, stating that the organization learned of the venue statement through media reports. Say Agency chief executive Anna Subcheva stated that the promoter received a contract draft with a deadline to sign by 27 August, adding that West had already received an advance payment of 1.5 billion rubles (approximately $17.7 million) for the performances.

Gazprom Arena has not signed any contracts to lease the stadium for this event. No such contract exists. Consequently, the concert cannot take place at our venue.

Political reactions and regulatory hurdles

The proposed concerts produced conflicting responses among Russian officials. State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova suggested that a meeting between West and President Vladimir Putin could occur if the presidential schedule permitted, though Kremlin spokespersons avoided questions regarding any planned encounter. Conversely, Russian politician Nikolay Novichkov demanded an investigation into the performer over his prior public praise of Adolf Hitler, stating that the concerts should be canceled unless the artist voiced public support for Russia. Regulatory requirements in Saint Petersburg also present administrative obstacles for the organizers. Municipal rules require public gatherings exceeding 300 attendees to secure formal authorization from the city Committee for Culture, an approval the concert promoter had not requested. If the concerts proceed, West would be the most prominent Western recording artist to perform in Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, following smaller appearances by musicians including DaBaby, Jason Derulo, and Akon.

International cancellations and touring record

The venue dispute in Saint Petersburg follows repeated cancellations across Western Europe stemming from antisemitic statements West made beginning in 2022. In April 2026, the British government barred West from entering the country, blocking a planned three-night headline appearance at London's Wireless Festival. Italian authorities canceled a scheduled concert in May citing public safety concerns, while Swiss football club FC Basel blocked a June booking at St. Jakob-Park after determining the performance did not align with club values. Further dates in France, Poland, and the Czech Republic were also called off during the year. West addressed the controversy in January 2026 through a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal, attributing his statements to untreated bipolar-1 disorder during a manic episode. Despite European venue rejections, West completed performances in 2026 across Turkey, the Netherlands, Georgia, Albania, Portugal, Spain, and Kazakhstan, with upcoming United States dates scheduled for New Orleans on 28 August and Chicago on 3 and 4 September.
