Former Mali midfielder Kalilou Traoré dies in road accident at 38
The defensive midfielder, a bronze medalist at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, died on Friday, 24 July 2026. He was 38.
Kalilou Traoré, a former Mali international who played for FC Sochaux-Montbéliard and several other European clubs, was killed in a road accident on Friday, 24 July 2026. His death was confirmed by the French club on Sunday.
A career cut short
Born in Mali, Traoré was a powerful defensive midfielder standing 192 centimetres tall. He began his career at AS Real Bamako before moving abroad, with spells at Wydad Casablanca in Morocco, NK Istra in Croatia, and Odense Boldklub in Denmark, where he featured in eight Europa League matches. In the summer of 2012 he joined FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in France's Ligue 1. He would make 11 league appearances for the club over two seasons, wearing the yellow and blue shirt.
International recognition
Traoré earned between 16 and 17 caps for Mali between 2010 and 2013, scoring one goal. The high point of his career came at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, where the Eagles finished third. That bronze medal remains one of Mali's best recent performances in the competition.
Early retirement
Injuries and health problems began to slow Traoré's progress at Sochaux. After missing several months of competition, he was forced to retire from professional football in 2014 at the age of only 26. His last professional club was FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.
Club pays tribute
The club, recently promoted to Ligue 2, released a statement on its social media channels.
The FC Sochaux-Montbéliard learned with deep sadness of the death of its former player Kalilou Traoré, at the age of 38. A Mali international, he wore the FCSM colours from 2012 to 2014, playing 11 Ligue 1 matches in the yellow and blue shirt. The club sends its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
