Morning interception at Gare du Midi

On Thursday morning, 3 September 2026, security forces detained an armed traveler at Brussels' Gare du Midi international railway station. The arrest occurred around 09:30 as the man was disembarking from a train that had arrived from France. A customs inspection initially uncovered a Kalashnikov-type war weapon concealed inside the suspect's travel bag. Following the discovery, railway police officers moved in with backing from a joint security patrol of federal police inspectors and Belgian armed forces personnel. Security personnel secured the platform and took the man into custody without reported resistance. The Brussels public prosecutor's office declined to release immediate comments, and authorities stated that the suspect's background, route, and motives remain under active investigation.

Federal response and station patrols

Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin confirmed the arrest on Thursday through an official press statement and messages posted on social media platform X. Quintin thanked the customs officers, police units, and soldiers for their swift and decisive intervention on the station platform.

“This demonstrates that strengthening patrols in railway stations with the help of our military is necessary and must be continued, if not extended.”

The interior minister stated that he is presenting a formal proposal to the federal government to maintain and expand joint military-police security patrols across key railway stations and subway networks. Quintin declined to address the suspect's personal profile or the precise specifications of the seized firearm, leaving those findings to investigators.

Operation Urban Shield and police reinforcements

The interception at Gare du Midi followed a series of expanded security initiatives introduced across the Belgian capital over recent months. Under the federal government's Operation Urban Shield, approximately 30 soldiers were assigned to assist police forces in civilian security duties and public monitoring. That military deployment was reinforced after seven separate shootings occurred within a single week during August. The sharp rise in street shootings prompted federal authorities to mobilize an additional 500 police officers, deploying them across high-risk neighborhoods and transport facilities to deter armed activity in public spaces.

Summer shootings and drug-trafficking conflicts

The morning arrest follows several violent confrontations in the Brussels municipalities of Anderlecht, Saint-Gilles, and Molenbeek across the summer of 2026. In late August, six shootings occurred across those three communes within several days. During that same period, two hooded individuals armed with Kalashnikov rifles attacked a district police station in Anderlecht. In July, two shootings occurred within hours in Anderlecht and Molenbeek, leaving one person injured. Julien Moinil, the King's Prosecutor in Brussels, stated that the ongoing violence is directly tied to internal turf wars between local criminal gangs competing for control of illegal drug distribution. The casualty count from regional gang violence in 2026 stands at two fatalities and 21 injured individuals.
