Sony fires Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton following investigation
Sony Pictures Television terminated Jim Thornton following an inquiry into photos taken aboard an American Airlines flight in May 2026, recasting his role before the September 14 season premiere.
Termination and investigation
Sony Pictures Television dismissed Jim Thornton from his role as announcer for Wheel of Fortune on September 4, 2026. The dismissal followed an internal inquiry initiated on Tuesday, September 1, when the studio suspended Thornton over misconduct claims. During the investigation, producers recast the role and hired an interim announcer to replace Thornton's voiceover contributions for the upcoming television season. The studio confirmed the termination in an official statement on Friday afternoon, ending Thornton's multi-year run on the syndicated series. Studio officials did not name a permanent replacement for the voiceover post.
Following a thorough investigation, Jim Thornton's employment with Wheel of Fortune has been terminated, effective immediately.
In-flight incident and allegations
The dismissal arose from an event aboard American Airlines Flight 1276 from Charlotte to Los Angeles on May 14, 2026. A passenger seated nearby observed Thornton using a laptop and captured photographic images of the screen, reporting that the monitor displayed a forum for individuals with pedophilic thoughts. The passenger alerted flight attendants and shared the images with the crew, leading the aircraft captain to notify ground authorities in California. Airport police met the flight upon its landing at Los Angeles International Airport and questioned Thornton before releasing him. On Thursday, September 3, the images of the laptop screen were published by TMZ.
On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) following concerns reported by a customer onboard.

Defense and legal response
Allison Hart, an attorney representing Thornton, stated that the announcer accessed the website by mistake while performing suicide prevention advocacy. Hart explained that Thornton had engaged in suicide prevention efforts over the past two years after losing a close relative to suicide. According to Hart, an acquaintance from a support group sent Thornton a link to the domain lifeline.chat, a platform intended for people dealing with pedophilic ideation. Hart stated that Thornton navigated away from the page as soon as he understood its contents, noting that no illicit material was downloaded. She added that law enforcement officers verified that no criminal activity took place.
In short, my client did nothing wrong.
Broadcast tenure and recasting
Thornton had served as the announcer for Wheel of Fortune since 2011, taking over the position following the 2010 death of long-running announcer Charlie O'Donnell. Over his tenure, Thornton voiced more than 2,200 episodes of the syndicated game show and joined the ABC primetime edition, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, upon its debut in 2021. His broadcast background also included work as an afternoon news anchor for Los Angeles radio station KNX 1070, alongside voice roles in television programs such as The Price Is Right, The Cleveland Show, Celebrity Deathmatch, The Soup, and the animated film Monsters, Inc. The upcoming season of Wheel of Fortune is scheduled to premiere on September 14, 2026, with all of Thornton's lines re-recorded by an interim voice artist.
