Barcelona reach €10m agreement with Arsenal to sign Gabriel Jesus

Transfer terms and contract structure

FC Barcelona have agreed terms with Arsenal to sign Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus in a transfer valued at an initial €10 million (approximately £8.5 million to £8.6 million, or $11.6 million). Performance-related bonuses and add-on clauses can increase the total financial package to €15 million. The 29-year-old forward will sign a contract running for two seasons through 2028, with the deal containing an option for an additional year. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Jesus is scheduled to arrive in Barcelona to complete his medical examination ahead of the transfer deadline on Tuesday.

Barcelona attacking reshuffle

Barcelona identified Jesus as an accessible market opportunity to replenish an attacking unit that lost Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Head coach Hansi Flick approved the move, seeking an experienced forward capable of playing centrally or operating across the flanks. Jesus enters an attacking roster that includes Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Karim Adeyemi, and Anthony Gordon. Italian club Napoli had also expressed interest in signing the Brazilian forward, but Barcelona moved to finalize negotiations with Arsenal to secure a cost-effective solution for Flick's frontline.

Arsenal squad status and injury history

Jesus had fallen out of Mikel Arteta's immediate plans at Arsenal, failing to make the 20-player matchday squad for both the 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City and the 4-0 Premier League victory against Coventry City. Arteta favoured Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres as his central attacking options. During the previous season, Jesus managed six goals across 27 appearances in all competitions, starting only three Premier League matches. His playing time was limited following an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in January, which sidelined him for three months. Since arriving from Manchester City in 2022, Jesus totaled 123 appearances, 32 goals, and 22 assists for the London club. In December, the forward had expressed his commitment to staying at the Emirates Stadium.

Atletico Madrid dispute over Alvarez

Barcelona pursued Jesus after encountering obstacles in their attempt to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. Arsenal had initially sought between £18 million and £20 million ($24.1 million to $26.8 million) for Jesus in May when multiple clubs made inquiries, but reduced their valuation as his contract entered its final stages. Atletico Madrid publicly rejected Barcelona's advances for Alvarez and submitted a formal complaint against the Catalan club to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in July. The complaint cited an alleged breach of ethics regarding Barcelona's approach, prompting the RFEF to open an internal investigation. Barcelona officials confirmed they received notification of the RFEF filing in late July, maintaining that signing Jesus remains an independent transaction while they monitor Alvarez for future transfer windows.
