On 7 September 2026, artists, family members, and state representatives gathered at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw for the funeral of actor Jan Frycz, who died on 15 August at the age of 72. The secular ceremony began at 11:00 in the cemetery funeral hall, where an honor guard from the Territorial Defence Forces stood beside a minimalist brown urn. Initiated by the Union of Polish Stage Artists and authorized by the Ministry of National Defence, the farewell received official state status. At 13:00, the funeral procession proceeded from Saint Honorata's Gate on Old Powązki to inter the actor in the Avenue of Deserved.

Tributes from colleagues and state officials

Colleagues from Polish cinema and theatre attended in large numbers, including Krystyna Janda, Janusz Gajos, Grażyna Torbicka, Borys Szyc, Małgorzata Kożuchowska, Kamil Nożyński, Andrzej Grabowski, and Robert Więckiewicz. Jan Englert, the former artistic director of the National Theatre, delivered a personal speech reflecting on directing Frycz in numerous theatrical and television productions.

I considered myself Jan Frycz's older brother. A professional older brother. I think that was a one-sided awareness. He never felt younger than me. It is very difficult for an older brother to state that the younger one is more talented. I experienced that many times.

Undersecretary of State Sławomir Rogowski read a tribute written by Minister of Culture and National Heritage Marta Cienkowska.

For nearly five decades he stepped onto the stage, creating dozens of unforgettable roles. He worked with the most prominent Polish directors. He was present in theatre, cinema, and television. But numbers and titles do not say the most important thing about him, because Jan Frycz could not be mistaken for anyone else.

Wreaths were sent by President Karol Nawrocki, Senate Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, national football coach Michał Probierz, Cracovia sports club, and cultural institutions. In accordance with family wishes, mourners placed donations into boxes for the Artists' Veteran Home in Skolimów instead of bringing flowers or offering personal condolences.

Career milestones and final stage work

Born on 15 May 1954 in Kraków, Frycz graduated from the State Higher School of Theatre in Kraków in 1978 and debuted in the stage production of "Damy i huzary". His career included prominent roles in "Wielki Szu", "Pornografia", "Pręgi", and the series "Ślepnąc od świateł", earning him three Polish Film Awards (Orły). He was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2005, followed by the Silver Gloria Artis Medal in 2005 and the Gold Gloria Artis Medal in 2015.

Final productions and personal recollections

Frycz continued working despite long-term illness. His final completed stage appearance was the King in Jan Klata's "Termopile polskie" at the National Theatre, followed by rehearsals for "Oresteja" shortly before his death. He was also scheduled to shoot scenes for the feature film "Właśnie, że tak!" in late August. A theatre colleague recalled his off-stage passion for crafting ship models, from the Santa Maria to the Titanic, and flying remote-controlled model aircraft inside the Grand Theatre. Frycz is survived by six children from two marriages.
