James' unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock. The network noted that Barker's role spanned "both production and post-production, as well as oversight of the series' distinctive soundtrack."
A career built on unscripted television
Barker began in television in 2011 at Leftfield Pictures, where he worked as a producer on series including "Counting Cars", "Forged in Fire" and "Pawn Stars". He later produced for Scout Productions, Sharp Entertainment and Kinetic Content before joining ITV America. At ITV he was a story producer on "Queer Eye", the acclaimed Netflix makeover show, helping craft its narrative style.
In August 2020 Barker joined "Love Island USA" as a story producer and advanced steadily. Over three seasons he accumulated credits on 110 episodes and was named full-time executive producer in January 2026. His responsibilities covered on-set production, post-production and supervision of the show's music. Barker also executive produced "Love Island Games" and served as consulting producer on "Love Island: Beyond the Villa".
A tribute amid an active season
The episode of "Love Island USA" scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 will be dedicated to Barker's memory. ITV America and Peacock confirmed the tribute, which comes as the eighth season continues its run. The decision to keep the show on air while honoring him has drawn mixed reactions.
