Italian ministry investigates high school after Gaza protest invite appears on student portal
The Italian education ministry ordered an inspection of a high school in Novi Ligure after an invitation to a pro-Palestinian march was posted to its official electronic register.
Ministerial inspection launched in Novi Ligure
The Regional School Office of Piedmont ordered an immediate inspection into the Edoardo Amaldi high school in Novi Ligure following reports that school platforms were used to publicize a political protest. The administrative review focuses on an announcement published on the online bulletin board of ClasseViva, the official digital register system used by Italian institutions to communicate with pupils and their families. Officials from the Ministry of Education and Merit stated that investigators will reconstruct the exact chronology of events and determine who authorized the publication. The primary objective of the regional inquiry is to determine whether an official school channel was improperly utilized to summon students to an external demonstration. The ministry warned that if the allegations reported in the press are verified, the publication will represent a serious breach of professional ethics and disciplinary codes.
Education minister warns against political indoctrination
Giuseppe Valditara, the Minister of Education and Merit, intervened publicly to defend the statutory neutrality of Italian state education.
The constitutional school is one that educates towards a critical spirit, pluralism, and rejects any form of indoctrination. The practice of indoctrinating students belongs only to totalitarian regimes.
Valditara emphasized that the ministerial inspection will reconstruct the episode in detail to assign individual responsibility. The administrative review followed an official inquiry request submitted by Riccardo Molinari, the parliamentary group leader for the League party in the Chamber of Deputies. Molinari commended the education minister for taking swift action to examine what he described as an opaque affair surrounding educational boundaries.
We cannot accept that our schools become fertile ground for those who think they can use a sensitive issue like this to spread political propaganda among the new generations. School educates, forms consciences, but cannot justify any attempt to transform teaching freedom into the freedom to spread single-minded thinking that imposes a pre-packaged and unilateral vision.
Opposition criticism and the planned Gaza march
The government inspection prompted immediate criticism from opposition lawmaker Elisabetta Piccolotti, who described the institutional intervention as part of an increasingly suffocating atmosphere within Italian educational institutions. Piccolotti linked the investigation to a separate recent incident in Genoa, where the Digos special police branch removed a banner reading "Nobody is a foreigner here" from the Daneo school. She argued that dispatching government inspectors over an initiative commemorating child casualties reflects an excessive clampdown on school community activities.
Logistics of the Shroud of Gaza demonstration
The controversial communication posted on the ClasseViva portal encouraged students to join the Shroud of Gaza march scheduled for Saturday, 10 October 2026. Organized by the group Coordination for Palestine, the demonstration will take place in the provincial capital of Alessandria. The central element of the march is a large ceremonial fabric inscribed with the names of 18,457 Palestinian minors killed in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the conflict. The notice distributed through the Edoardo Amaldi high school bulletin board indicated that organizers planned to arrange dedicated round-trip transportation between Novi Ligure and Alessandria depending on the final number of student registrations.
