Italian hunter, 56, shot dead at his vehicle after hunt in Daleszyce, Poland
Police in Kielce are investigating how a shot fired while a 56-year-old Italian hunter was taking hunting dogs and his rifle from his vehicle killed him at the scene. No witness saw the moment of the shot.
The shooting
On Thursday, 8 October, hunters returned to the premises of a hunting club in Daleszyce, Swietokrzyskie Voivodeship, after a hunt had ended. Sources give slightly different times for the incident, with Polsat News and Super Express writing after 3 pm and FAKT24 placing it around 3:30 pm. According to police, a 56-year-old Italian citizen went to the rear of his vehicle, where he intended to let out the hunting dogs and take out his firearm. A shot was fired and he was hit.
Emergency services were alerted, a medical team was sent from Daleszyce, and a rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene. The man died at the scene, and his body was secured for further examination.
The investigation
Police officers from the Kielce city unit are working under the supervision of a prosecutor to establish the circumstances. Spokesman st. asp. Jacek Borek said that the investigators' first findings point to the shot being fired while the dogs and weapon were being taken out of the vehicle.
No witness who notified the emergency services saw the moment of the shot itself, so we are trying to reconstruct the circumstances together with a ballistics expert.
An accidental discharge is one of the main hypotheses under consideration. Police say this has not been confirmed and that the final picture will depend on the results of further examinations.
Open questions
The expert opinion, the inspection of the weapon and the scene, and the results of the examinations are expected to show how the shot was fired. Investigators also plan to establish exactly what the man was doing directly before the incident. The investigation is continuing under prosecutorial supervision.
